In joining our Nuclear & Power business, you’ll be part of one of four key teams in the UK:

  • Power New Build
  • Reactor Operations & Decommissioning
  • Energy Net Zero
  • Decommissioning & Waste Services.

Requirements: Minimum 2.2 Bachelors/BEng degree in Civil or Structural Engineering

As a graduate Civil and Structural Engineer within the Power New Build team you will be supporting the UK’s ambition to achieve Net Zero emission targets. You will have the opportunity to work on numerous exciting projects, including helping us design the first new nuclear power stations to be built in the UK for 25 years, helping the UK achieve its greenhouse emissions Net Zero target. We support our clients remotely, but many opportunities are available to deliver work from our client locations and, potentially, from the power stations.

Our team is employing a number of state-of-art digital technologies to support our clients, including the use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), Virtual and Augmented Reality (AR/VR) and Building Information Modelling (BIM). You will be supported in your career development as you develop your technical skills in structural assessment and design of various structures for complicated loadings, and beyond as you begin to take on management and leadership roles, as well as engage with client and regulators.

We are looking for candidates with a good understanding of civil and structural engineering, who are keen on developing their knowledge in the nuclear energy sector. Under the supervision of our experienced engineers, you can expect to work on large, complex projects as part of a multi-disciplinary team, alongside electrical and control engineers, mechanical engineers, and process engineers. Work is delivered in innovatve ways, with a focus on digital technologies.

Within this team you’ll find yourself working primarily on projects in the energy systems asset market. Our portfolio of projects encompasses asset integrity, design, and assurance for a variety of clients across a broad spectrum of facilities ranging from district heating, biomass, gas and Combined Heat & Power networks to large scale generation plant, gas and oil storage and decentralised energy assets. The broad nature of our project portfolio means you will be working on a variety of projects ranging from large interdisciplinary design and construction projects to supporting clients with discipline specific technical advice. The teams and projects you will be working with are at the core of the company’s long terms focus on diverse, clean power generation and have an emphasis on achieving net zero, your work will be an important part of this.

As a graduate Civil and Structural Engineer within the Energy Net Zero team you will have the opportunity to work on exciting projects within multi-disciplinary teams. There is a wide range of technical skills that you can develop including the design of reinforced concrete and steel structures using various UK and international codes and standards, structural assessment for complicated loadings such as seismic, blast and impact. You will also have the opportunity to gain project management experience, as well as engage with client and regulators.

As a Graduate Civil Engineer within Reactor Operations and Decomissioning, you will join a growing and vibrant team and find yourself immersed in a diverse portfolio of work covering the entire nuclear lifecycle in both the civil nuclear sector and UK defence industry. With the knowledge and skills that you’ve gained throughout your studies, you’ll be ready to start this exciting next chapter within a diverse team of highly skilled engineers. As part of our team, you will be empowered to gain broad experience across our portfolio of work with key clients such as EDF, Magnox and Rolls-Royce.

You can expect to gain experience in a variety of working environments, including being based in our AtkinsRéalis offices around the UK, as well as gaining valuable site-based experience supporting our clients on their operating sites at the forefront of carbon neutral electricity generation. Our civil & structural engineering team provide technical design, repair specification and consultancy advice to our clients. In the early stages of the role, you’ll find yourself detailed checking calculations and documents. This will give you an insight into the standard and style that we produce our work here at AtkinsRéalis. This is also a good way to understand what the team are working on and what current projects involve. As you develop through these tasks, you’ll gradually be introduced to carrying out your own calculations with the teams' engineers happy to guide you and give advice. You’ll also identify customer requirements, produce specifications, support project management activities, and collaborate with clients as well as your AtkinsRéalis colleagues and our supply chain partners. All of this adds up to an outstanding environment to gain varied experience that will aid you with your professional development and progress towards professional registration.

As a graduate Civil and Structural Engineer within the Decommissioning and Waste Services, you will be part of a team supporting clients within the Nuclear industry to deliver innovative solutions in a challenging environment. You will be part of a multi-disciplinary, forward thinking team who strive to use cutting edge technology in a range of projects. You would be working on some of the most complex and challenging decommissioning projects within the Nuclear industry from initial concept through to detailed design and delivery, our portfolio is diverse, immersive and ultimately very rewarding.

We are looking for graduates with a good understanding of civil & structural engineering and engineering design, who love the idea of applying their engineering skills to help solve some of the most complex problems in the nuclear industry, and ensure the clean evolution of the UK nuclear industry. You should also be keen to develop your knowledge, skills and understanding of the field and have an interest in the nuclear energy sector. The ideal candidate will have an interest in static and dynamic loading and have a real passion for 3D digital innovation and 3D modelling with a vision for how this can shape the future of engineering.
