Atkins presents WTS with $10,000 to fund student participation in 2016 DC Youth Summit

Atkins is helping Women’s Transportation Seminar (WTS) further its mission of changing the face of the transportation industry by supporting programs that inspire girls and women to consider transportation careers. A $10,000 Atkins Foundation scholarship was presented to WTS to secure funding for high school girls to attend WTS’s annual Transportation YOU DC Youth Summit in Washington, DC.

The Transportation YOU program at local WTS chapters provides hands-on, interactive mentoring in science, technology, engineering and mathematics for girls 13 to 18. Students are introduced to a variety of educational opportunities and transportation careers.

“Transportation and the supporting infrastructure needed to help move people and products safely and efficiently are major components of our business model,” said Barry Schulz, chief operating officer, Atkins, North America, and WTS member. “Our industry needs the creative minds and innovation of everyone to help build sustainable transportation systems for the future, and we are 100 percent supportive of WTS’s efforts to encourage girls and advance women in the profession.”

Using Atkins funding, high school girls selected from local WTS chapter Transportation YOU programs will attend the DC Youth Summit in June. The five-day event in the nation’s capital exposes participants to various facets of the transportation industry. Students are assigned a transportation professional as mentor, get introduced to industry leaders including the U.S. Secretary of Transportation, attend workshops, and participate in an academic competition.

“We have a longtime partnership with Atkins and their WTS members who are committed to raising awareness among professionals and students about opportunities that exist for women in the transportation industry,” said Marcia Ferranto, president and chief executive officer, WTS. “Sponsorship for students to attend the DC Youth Summit reinforces the firm’s commitment to making a difference in the lives of our younger generation of future transportation leaders.”

WTS is an international organization focused on advancing women in transportation by providing professional development, mentoring and networking opportunities with industry leaders. Members include more than 5,000 women and men in 60 chapters throughout the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom.

Atkins is a sponsor of this week’s three-day WTS Annual Conference, taking place in Austin, Texas.

The Atkins Foundation, a 501(c)(3), funds programs and charities championed by employees to support science, technology, engineering and mathematics initiatives and scholarships. To date the Foundation has awarded more than $2.5 million in grants to programs in communities throughout the United States.
