Graduate Community

At Atkins we create a great community, with over 300 talented individuals joining our graduate development programme (GDP) each year, participating in sports, charitable and social events – achieving and having fun together. Here's a glimpse of all the fun things you can get involved in during your graduate development programme:

Graduate Induction

Each year of the graduate programme you’ll be invited to attend cohort events. In year one this is a two day induction – here you’ll get the opportunity to meet the other 300+ graduates joining the business. There’s also various workshops and skills building sessions as well as a dinner and drinks reception.

Charity Challenge

Each year our new intake of UK graduates are set the annual challenge to raise money for RedR, an international disaster relief charity which works to save and rebuild lives of people throughout the world who are affected by natural and man-made disasters.

This year’s graduates are aiming to top last year's impressive fundraising total and raise £20,000 over the next 5 weeks.  With 18 teams hard at work planning activities, some of which will get employees involved across 28 of our offices, the graduates’ goal is certainly within reach.

Annual Ski Trip

The Atkins Graduate Ski Trip has been running for 5 years, growing every year and is now the biggest event in the Graduate social calendar.

This year 110 graduates went to Val Thorens where they skied and socialised all day and night, with a beer pong competition, pub quiz, mountain meal, tobogganing and a fancy dress bar crawl. It’s a great way to meet your new colleagues outside the office environment and you’re guaranteed to come back with a load of new friends from offices all across the UK.

Be sure to sign up when you join - last year’s trip sold out in less than half an hour!

Summer Trip

The Atkins Graduate Summer Trip usually takes place over the bank holiday weekend. Last year a group of graduates travelled to Dublin to experience what Ireland has to offer, whilst this year was a visit to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. The Summer Trip Committee always have some amazing activities planned in the itinerary; as well as the comedy, this year’s trip saw the graduates learning to dance like a true Scot at a ceilidh.

Graduate Forum

The purpose of the Graduate Forum is to unite the UK Graduate Community across each of the 5 businesses and to ensure every voice is heard and has the power to influence. Representatives from each business reach out to their respective communities and listen to the needs and desires of each graduate. The forum turns graduates' ideas into reality and brings about not only positive change within the GDP but also across Atkins.

During your time on our graduate scheme you may get the opportunity to complete a secondment or placement in a different part of the Atkins business. If you work in transportation this could be across to Bangalore in India as well as various secondments across the UK with other business areas.

Graduate Horizons

One of the greatest things about working at Atkins is the diversity of projects, businesses and locations that we operate in and joining Atkins as a graduate is a great way to make the most of this. Whether you want to develop skills in a different discipline, explore new and exciting projects across the world or discover another office in the UK or further afield, Graduate Horizons can help you make the most of the opportunities available at Atkins. Graduate Horizons is an open community of likeminded young professionals who want to take advantage of the diverse opportunities available to further their development. By joining this community you open yourself up to a raft of advice, shared experiences and opportunities to expand your network and discover what could be on your horizon…

Sports and Social Clubs

As part of the GDP, graduates get the chance to attend social and sport events. Each office has one to three social coordinators that organise the events for the graduates in their office and they meet every quarter to exchange ideas and gather feedback on what events to run in the future. These events include anything from pub crawls and meals at restaurants to karting, bouldering or ice skating! In addition to the office specific socials, Atkins Graduate forum organises annual summer trips to other countries (last one was in Ireland!) and annual ski trips to France each lasting 3-7 days!

Graduate Programme Events

In years two and three there are events to reflect on your performance and network with your fellow graduate peers:
  • GDP Year 2 event. At this two-day workshop you will be together with a group of other graduates from across the company. You'll develop team-working, communication skills and learn about innovation and client engagement.
  • GDP Year 3 event. This workshop covers a range of topics to develop your interpersonal skills, such as influencing, managing conflict and managing change. You will also consider your career aspirations and produce a personal development plan.

Graduate Summer Event

At the conclusion of the three-year programme Atkins holds a summer event to formally recognise completion. This event is a mixture of development and sporting activities plus an evening dinner.
