Highways and Transportation- Graduate Transport Planning

As one of the world's leading transport planning and highway engineering consultancies, the Highways & Transportation division of Atkins works with national and local governments, highways authorities and funding agencies worldwide to help clients plan, design and enable transport projects.

We are looking to recruit several graduates into our Transport Planning teams (part of Highways and Transportation) across the UK.

Transport Planning Graduate
The Transport Planning business provides advisory services to transport clients in transport policy, scheme appraisal, design and transport modelling.   

Opportunities exist for Graduate Transport Planners to work alongside our teams based in Leeds, Birmingham, Bristol and London. Working as part of a team you will work on a variety of transport planning projects, ranging from appraisal of transport schemes to investigating opportunities for transport improvements in a regeneration area. On a day to day basis you will:
  • Prepare reports summarising technical analysis and findings;
  • Regularly be required to solve problems and develop innovative solutions;
  • Undertake numerical analysis;
  • Be required to check drawings and calculations;
  • Undertake site visits as required as part of a project;
  • Attend meetings with clients and other stakeholders;
  • Plan your work and from time to time that of others on a weekly basis;
  • Ensure compliance with Health & Safety, environmental and managerial procedures; and
  • Work towards professional qualifications and undertake training.

Graduate Transport Modeller
This role is in the field of transport planning and modelling, which deals with a wide range of projects from strategic and local modelling studies to policy and strategy reviews. As a Graduate Transport Modeller, you will work on a variety of studies for both public and private sector clients so an understanding of transport planning is desirable. To support the delivery of projects, your activities may include:
  • Designing and analysing surveys to obtain data for a wide range of travel activities;
  • Combining data from various sources including models, national censuses and surveys;
  • Analysing data and producing maps and diagrams using Geographical Information Systems;
  • Building highway and public transport models using software packages including SATURN, EMME/2, VISSIM and S-PARAMICS
  • Forecasting traffic growth for various economic and planning scenarios;
  • Evaluating transport planning problems;
  • Appraisal of transport schemes;
  • Reviewing policy documents and guidance notes;
  • Writing technical notes and project reports for clients.
Graduate Transport Planners: Pedestrian and Space Planning
The positions are for two key consulting project delivery roles;
  • The first focuses on providing pedestrian movement analysis across a broad range of UK and overseas projects;
  • Whilst the second provides specialist information design and strategy development for our specialist wayfinding services.
We are looking for individuals with an interest in pedestrian planning and the drive to learn and progress quickly. The successful candidate will be someone keen to see their career develop with a desire to take greater ownership and responsibility for technical delivery and, in due course, management of projects. The role will involve working initially in the pedestrian and space planning sector but will not preclude opportunities for involvement in a wider range of transport planning projects across our London business as part of graduate rotation and supported career development. This role in an expanding team offers the opportunity for rapid career progression dependent on ability.

Applicants to the Transport Planning business should be studying towards a first degree in a relevant subject - including Transport Planning, Town Planning, Geography, Economics or similar. A Masters degree in a Transport related subject would be beneficial but is not essential.

Strategic Transport Infrastructure and Modelling Graduate
The role is in the field of Transport Planning (Forecasting and Appraisal), which deals with a wide range of projects from the forecasting and appraisal of strategic and local transport schemes to transport policy and strategy reviews.

As a Graduate Transport Planner, you will work on a variety of studies for both public and private sector clients so an understanding of transport planning is desirable. To support the delivery of projects, your activities may include:
  • Designing and analysing surveys to obtain data for a wide range of travel activities;
  • Combining data from various sources including models, national censuses and surveys;
  • Analysing data and producing maps and diagrams using Geographical Information Systems;
  • Building highway and public transport models using software packages including SATURN, EMME/2, VISSIM and S-PARAMICS;
  • Developing and applying bespoke spreadsheet based forecasting and appraisal techniques and tools;
  • Evaluating transport planning problems and issues;
  • Analysis of transport and travel markets and operations;
  • Forecasting demand for various economic and planning scenarios;
  • Cost and revenue modelling of transport services and operations;
  • Economic and financial appraisal of transport schemes;
  • Reviewing policy documents and guidance notes; and
  • Writing technical notes and project reports for clients.
Applicants should have a degree in a quantitative subject with a 2:1 (or equivalent) such as Economics, Engineering, Geography and Urban Planning and preferably a Masters degree in a Transport related subject Our graduates come from a diverse range of disciplines but need to be numerate and have excellent written and spoken communication skills with an interest in transport technologies. You will need to be able to work as part of a team (often a virtual team) as well as on your own.
   
Intelligent Transport Systems Consultant
The role is in Intelligent Transport Systems, which deals with a wide range of technology based projects within the transport field.

We are looking to recruit a permanent Graduate Consultant / Consultant to work in the Transport Technology Team based in Epsom, with the flexibility to work on projects across the UK. As a Graduate Consultant, your activities may include:
  • Undertaking a variety of project work relating to ITS projects under the direction of Project Manager(s)
  • Developing user requirements through discussion with Clients, other stakeholders and the wider Project Team.
  • Undertake site visits to collect relevant data and supervise installation and testing of equipment.
  • Prepare documents and drawings in accordance with the requirements of our Business and Quality Assurance Systems, Relevant Standards and Codes of Practice.
  • Liaise with internal and external Design Teams, Clients and Contractors as appropriate.
  • Reviewing policy documents and guidance notes;
  • Writing technical notes and project reports for clients.
Applicants should have a 2:1 (or equivalent) first degree in a quantitative subject such as Economics, Engineering, Geography or a Science based discipline and preferably a Masters degree in a Transport related subject. Our graduates come from a diverse range of disciplines but need to be numerate and have excellent written and spoken communication skills with an interest in transport technologies. You will need to be able to work as part of a team (often a virtual team) as well as on your own.
