Atkins is one of the UK’s leading multi-disciplinary consultancies engaged in numerous high profile projects for Clients in both the Public and Private Sector. Atkins’ Transportation covers all aspects of multidisciplinary design and management from inception to options appraisal through to detailed scheme design and delivery support.

The Civils and Structures team in York is recruiting an Assistant Engineer to help deliver multi-disciplinary railway projects, predominantly in the UK. We undertake a wide range of commissions for a variety of Clients, from initial feasibility through to detailed design and implementation support. Typical projects being undertaken at present include new railway stations, linespeed enhancement schemes, electrification projects and the design of new structures to support new railway alignments. Such projects require the team to undertake a range of surveys and produce design drawings, calculations, technical specifications and reports.

We are looking for someone who enjoys solving engineering problems and is hardworking to ensure our teams always deliver great things. You will be supported to develop yourself and to carry out work on your own, and to ensure we go the extra mile to exceed client needs. We expect you to:

• Be an excellent communicator with confidence to work on your own initiative or as part of a team
• Use your excellent analytical skills to derive potential solutions to engineering problems and engineering judgement to appraise and recommend options
• Undertake designs and the production and review of design documentation including sketches, drawings, calculations, reports and specifications
• Stay abreast of industry developments and changes in standards
• Develop staff and yourself to work hard toward professional qualifications under formal training agreements
• Be available to travel across the UK and work away from home on occasions


Requirements (essential criteria)

• BEng / MEng or MSc degree in civil engineering or equivalent
• Working towards Incorporated or Chartered status of a relevant professional body
• Sound understanding of technical principles underlying civil engineering, particularly civil engineering structures
• Experience of working with CAD packages, including Microstation and/or AutoCAD
• A good understanding of relevant structures standards, especially Eurocodes
• Excellent spoken and written English
• Strong interpersonal and team working skills

This role may require security clearance and offers of employment will be dependent on obtaining the relevant level of clearance. If this is necessary it will be discussed with you at interview.
