Assistant Environmental Consultants/ Consultants

We currently have a number of opportunities for an Assistant Environmental Consultant and Environmental Consultant to join the Contaminated Land & Hydrogeology (CLAH) team in Birmingham.  The work involves UK and International projects being delivered by Atkins across a range of exciting market sectors, including the development of Cities, Transportation and Energy Infrastructure and International markets.
We are looking for highly motivated individuals with demonstrable post graduate experience in the monitoring, investigation and qualitative and semi-quantitative risk assessment of land contamination and brownfield land regeneration to join our reputable CLAH team and support an expanding project workload and client base.

  • Organisation, collation and assessment of desk-based information as part of Phase 1 Desk Studies.
  • Developing conceptual site models and carrying out qualitative risk assessments.
  • Checking of client deliverables as part of Quality Assurance / Control.
  • Organising and supervising ground investigations and monitoring, carrying out soil sampling and ground gas/vapour/leachate/groundwater and surface water monitoring and sampling and/or supervising or supporting others in contractor management, liaison and supervision.
  • Data management.
  • Degree qualified in a relevant engineering or science subject (e.g. geology, geotechnics, hydrogeology, chemistry, environmental science) with 2.1 achievement or better.
  • Masters qualified in a relevant specialism would be desirable.
  • Ideally actively working towards chartership with a relevant professional body.
Essential Criteria
  • Demonstrate good, relevant land contamination/brownfield land experience in Phase 1 Desk Studies and Phase 2 Site Investigations.
  • Be able to draft technical reports under guidance and of acceptable technical quality.
  • Knowledge and technical understanding of the qualitative risk assessment process for controlled waters, human health, ecology, property, vapour and ground gas.
  • Familiarity with relevant codes of practice and industry standards and have broad understanding of environmental legislation.
  • Ability to travel throughout the UK and work on short term assignments overseas.


Desirable Criteria
Ideally the successful candidate would be able to demonstrate one or more of the following criteria:
  • Experience of investigation and assessment of former Gasworks, development sites (residential and/or commercial), and experience in up and mid-stream oil and gas operations.
  • An understanding of basic geotechnical requirements that can be obtained during site investigations and experience of obtaining data from the field (e.g. SPTs, CPTs etc).
  • Demonstrate ability to support senior management with bid preparation.
  • International experience, particularly in the AGT region (Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey).
