Assistant Modeller/Engineer

The N&DE team carries out a range of projects related to water and wastewater, including the design of water supply networks and trunk mains, through to drainage network improvement schemes to relieve flooding and pollution problems. This typically involves waste water and clean water modelling and analysis to support operational improvements or other interventions. Experience of network modelling and civil engineering design would be advantageous but not essential 

This role will involve working on feasibility studies, using computer analyses to support engineering design and analyses, completion of technical tasks as appropriate, site visits and liaison with clients, contractors, stakeholders and other professional bodies. The output will typically be in short reports to outline the approach taken and findings from the investigation. 

The role may require the post holder to work away from their normal office in client offices for extended periods.

Requirements 

Qualifications: 
• BSc/BEng degree level, typically engineering or related such as geography, or equivalent experience 
• Excellent mathematics and English at GCSE (or higher) 

Essential: 
• An interest in the water industry and desire to apply your skills to the challenges the water industry faces 
• Team player 
• Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint 
• Excellent communication Skills – oral and written 
• Proactive self-starter 
• Desire to learn and develop technically and work towards a professional qualification 

Advantageous: 
• Any prior experience of similar work in areas such as water supply, treatment and drainage 
• Understanding of the water cycle 
• Geographic information systems (MapInfo/ArcGIS) 
• Visual Basic or other programming skills 
• Knowledge and experience of computer modelling principles 
• Understanding of both water distribution and collection systems 
• UK driving licence 

Training 
Atkins develops individuals through a portfolio of training and development activities designed to help you make the best of your abilities and talents. These are reviewed with individuals through an annual appraisal process. We actively support staff in achieving membership of relevant institutions. 

Responsibilities 
• Development of sewer system models to investigate problems and generation of outline solutions 
• Development of 1D and 2D models to investigate flood risk and flooding mechanisms. 
• Analysis of sewerage related operational data 
• Support development of technical reports and other project deliverables 
• Undertake site asset surveys for physical and condition assessments 
• Prepare (and adhere to) health and safety risk assessments 

The Individual 
The successful individual will be looking to learn and develop technically, working towards a professional qualification. They will be self-motivated and demonstrate an ability to work with others in a variety of project roles. They will be knowledgeable about changes in the Water Industry and implications on design and performance criteria. 

This role may require security clearance and offers of employment will be dependent on obtaining the relevant level of clearance. If this is necessary it will be discussed with you at interview.
