The Role

Atkins’ Energy UK & Europe Business delivers a range of services including engineering design from Front End Engineering Design (FEED) through to Detailed design, Asset integrity management, Consulting and Analysis work for the oil and gas, power, nuclear and renewable energy markets.

This is a great opportunity to develop a career in project management: we are looking for an Assistant Project Manager who will be part of an established project management team managing the delivery of Atkins’ technical projects for our clients or directly embedded within our client’s major project organisations. Working with the support of the team you will develop your project management skills across project controls, commercial management and technical delivery, positioning yourself as a future leader within our business.
You will have experience and/or knowledge of the complete project lifecycle. You’ll have direct experience of applying a range of project management principles and skills to deliver successful project outcomes, with specific examples of supporting the management of complex technical challenges, and responsibility for the monitoring and control of quality, time, cost and technical performance of engineering projects.

The Person

Building and developing relationships is a key part of this role. You will be client focused, and you must be able to appreciate complex practical, regulatory, technical and commercial issues and to work constructively with a broad range of stakeholders.
You enjoy new challenges and are keen to learn, whilst also wanting to support others within our diverse multi-disciplinary teams.
The role requires the ability to successfully manage the commercial and quality performance of projects and proactively deploy a range of techniques to control delivery, cost, manage risk and change, you will be assisting in leading project teams that are either local to you, or distributed across multiple sites.

Other aspects of the role will include supporting the growth of our project delivery capabilities in Energy through building a reputation for excellence, mentoring others, supporting business development and bidding activities.

You must be mobile and willing to be seconded to work at locations across the UK if required.


Responsibilities

• Assisting with delivery of project management and contract management to agreed brief, scope and budgets.
• Establishing project documentation & schedules and ensuring that there is a common understanding across the team and that the team itself is appropriately resourced.
• Assisting with leading the project team – motivating, guiding and developing the team.
• Communicating, liaising and managing the client on a project by project basis.
• Assisting with actively managing the project – technically and financially, in accordance with corporate and business policies, directives, guidance and procedures.
• Assisting with financial, commercial and risk management from project inception through to completion on projects including implementation of robust change control processes.
• Assisting with defining lines of communication and the responsibilities for co-ordination within the project team.
• Monitoring and reporting performance against schedule, technical quality, financial and other Key Performance Indicators.

Requirements

• Degree qualified in engineering or similar technical subject.
• Some experience of working in multi-disciplinary engineering teams.
• Excellent interpersonal skills.
• Sound business acumen and understanding of risk and commercial awareness.
• The ability to make decisions, act on your own initiative and operate in a pro-active way.
• A proactive and flexible working attitude.
•Demonstrate a responsible attitude towards safety and security.
•Passion for the Energy sector (Nuclear, Oil & Gas and Renewables)

The following additional requirements are desirable:
• Chartered Engineer, or in the advanced stages of working towards this.
• Hold a professional project or programme management related qualification.
• Energy sector experience including design, construction and decommissioning (including CDM, IOSH, supplier and contractor management).
• Delivery of complex technical consultancy projects and services.
• IT skills, with experience of MS Project or P6 software.
