Associate Architect / Associate Director - Schools

Atkins Architects are looking for an inspirational work winner to help deliver its ambitious targets we have within the schools market in Bristol and South-West region. Atkins are already very successful in this market but we are looking to significantly grow our market presence in region over the next 2-3 years. This role would be key to this success. We are looking for someone to:

  • Be client centric
  • Be a leader of bids and opportunities in this market
  • Establish, maintain and develop relationships with key clients and prospective clients 
  • Be engaged with the successful delivery of secured projects

Atkins Architects is a national practice of over 400 Professional employees. We operate from 12 regional offices in the UK and have a wide variety of skills such as Architects, Building Surveyors, Interior Designers, Landscape Architects, Urban Designers and Master planners.

We primarily focus on Education, Commercial & Residential and Rail station design within the Bristol office where the role will be based and have a local team of over 100 employees.




We are looking for an enthusiastic new member to work with our existing team focusing primarily on this HE & FE market. We are looking for someone to:

  • Have a portfolio of clients or contacts in this market
  • Proven track record of winning and developing new business opportunities
  • Have a detailed understanding of the design and delivery of primary and secondary schools
  • Have a willingness to develop contractor led standardised design solutions
  • Have a need detailed knowledge of local authority procurement routes
  • Be creative in their approach

Design Management

  • To manage and inspire a team through strong and appropriate leadership
  • To ensure design responses are pragmatic and respond to the client brief whilst respecting the opportunities and constraints that each site affords, through climate, context and culture.
  • To continue to develop designs that are firmly rooted with a strong narrative and that seek to enhance our reputation

Business Management

  • Lead projects by providing design and technical leadership for major projects
  • Liaison with key clients and be capable of discussing design/technical solutions to stakeholders including technical and non-technical clients – both in projects and at tender stage
  • Successful delivery of projects to a high level of quality and client satisfaction acting as Lead Consultant/Design Manager

Commercial Management

  • Strategic vision of the market and industry and ability to focus our business to take full advantage of market conditions
  • Detailed knowledge of our competitors, understand our market differentiators and help to shape them
  • Experience in preparing bids and tendering.
