This Position is open for our Birmingham, Bristol, Derby, Edinburgh, Epsom, Glasgow, Oxford, Peterborough, Swansea, and Warrington Offices.

Do you have the ambition, enthusiasm and technical capability to work with us as an Associate or Associate Director within the Water Resources Planning sector? We are looking for someone to take a leadership role in our water resources modelling team within our incredibly successful water management consultancy business.  This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced candidate looking to progress their career in a fast paced and exciting industry.

Our highly respected Water Management Consultancy team has been at the forefront of new developments for the latest Water Resource Management Planning cycle and is applying new tools, such as Pywr, that are revolutionising how the industry plans resilient and sustainable water supplies for the future. We are building on this success to grow our team and continue to deliver a wide range of exciting, high-profile projects for water companies and regional water resource groups. You will be responsible for taking a lead role, growing our business through both winning and delivering work across our extensive client portfolio, and in so doing, enhancing our reputation for technical excellence.

As an experienced water resources modelling specialist, you will have extensive experience managing technical teams to deliver high-profile projects across the UK and / or internationally. You will work closely with our technical specialists based all across the UK in our established teams in Birmingham, Bristol, Derby, Epsom, Glasgow, Oxford, Peterborough, or Warrington.

AtkinsRéalis is one of the world’s most respected design, engineering and project management consultancies, with over 35,000 employees worldwide. At AtkinsRéalis, we offer more than just a job. We offer an opportunity to make a difference and shape the world to benefit future generations and the natural environment.

As part of our Environment practice, the Water Management Consultancy business operates at the interface between people and the water environment, tackling problems around water, its habitats and future change. We provide a unique blend of skills across a large breadth of technical areas, a diverse team of passionate, intelligent, digitally-minded, capable, and innovative staff. We enjoy working collaboratively delivering projects that bring about real change and make a difference to the environment and society. Working at the forefront of the water management, we want to ensure that our staff can develop their career working on the most interesting, innovative range of projects.

As part of this commitment, we understand the need for a diverse and flexible workforce, where a work-life balance is important. So, by default AtkinsRéalis offers flexible working, where there is no fixed 9 to 5, no need for a 5-day week, no requirement for a full-time contract, and no requirement to spend all your working time in the office.

Responsibilities

Joining a well-established and successful team, you will work with our Technical Authority and Technical Leads in winning, delivering and managing our portfolio of water resources projects. You will champion high standards of performance, and influence project development. As an expert in the field, you will undertake your own work to an excellent standard, and review the work of others, leading on projects and frameworks as appropriate. You will work closely with our clients to develop trusted relationships, supporting them in a confident, professional manner.  You will lead on bid preparation and develop new areas of business for the team.  As an Associate or Associate Director you will be a well-recognised specialist, leading complex projects in your areas of expertise, mentoring and supporting more junior staff, and will be expected to work closely with the team to further develop the group’s objectives, portfolio of projects and clients, and digital tools.

Requirements

With a degree or higher in an engineering, environmental or science subject, you are likely to be chartered or have achieved Fellow status through CIWEM or another relevant professional body. You will be recognised as a leading figure across the industry amongst water companies and regulators with experience of leadership within multidisciplinary teams. As such, you will have comprehensive knowledge in all aspects of water resources modelling, including delivery of key inputs of Statutory Plans such as drought plans and Water Resource Management Plans (WRMP), experience in operational planning, and in supporting companies with drought permit / order applications. Your wider experience will include components of the WRMP, such as calculating various components of the supply-demand balance, demand forecasting, options appraisal, uncertainty and risk (e.g. headroom and outage), and investment modelling.

You will be able to demonstrate wide-ranging expertise applying approaches and using industry-wide models, including Aquator, Miser or Pywr water resource models. As an increasing proportion of our work is undertaken in Python or R programming packages, an ability to work within these programming environments is desirable. Similarly, an ability to develop new and innovative approaches is encouraged, to help us continue to develop our digital tools. As an Associate or Associate Director you will primarily be acting as a Technical Lead for a team of specialist modellers, supporting them to define and deliver outputs for a range of water resource projects. However, the role will also require elements of hands-on technical delivery for complex problem solving and detailed review.

You will be highly motivated and proactive, with a confident and professional manner. You will have excellent numerical, analytical, report-writing and presentational skills and be able to demonstrate delivery of exceptional technical work within the water sector. Your outstanding interpersonal skills and an ability to communicate effectively at all levels will suit collaborative working and the building of high quality client relationships.
