Location: Mississauga, ON.

Reporting to the Manager, Bids & Strategy, this role, Bid Lead, Major Projects, supports the Bid Team, as necessary, through phases 1-7 of the Nuclear BD Lifecycle. The phases are as follows:

  • Strategic Planning and Positioning.
  • Opportunity Assessment.
  • Capture.
  • Bid Planning.
  • Bid Preparation.
  • Opportunity Closing.
  • Continual Improvement.

This is a highly networked role that requires an ability to work collaboratively with multiple functions and deliver under pressure and to challenging deadlines.

Your role within the team:

  • General Strategy and Capture duties include:
    • Supports the Manager, Bids & Strategy and Account Managers with capture strategy development for strategic proposals. Activity success is defined as understanding the client needs, the competitive landscape, our solution and value-adds, as well as applying lessons learned from past proposals and project execution, to assimilate a capture plan that will guide the team to enhancing the opportunity’s win percentage.
    • Works closely with the account manager in the capture phase, to ensure capture strategy is clear to the bid team and implemented from bid kick off.
    • Supports the Manager, Bids & Strategy and Account Managers in developing and executing teaming agreements with strategic partners, as well as conducting business partners reviews.
    • Works with the Business Development Strategy Team to support new business strategy and quality initiatives, as and when required.
  • General Bid Lead duties include:
    • Manages sensitive information for strategic partnerships leading to potential opportunities and proposals; facilitates movement of complex and confidential information between stakeholders.
    • Leads and manages a designated bid team, consisting of technical, project management, commercial, legal, procurement and other key stakeholders, as required, to develop and submit major bid-compliant, high-quality proposals that meet the customers’ needs as well as AtkinsRéalis business objectives, on time within established proposal budgets.
    • Facilitates proposal kickoff meetings and regular proposal progress status meetings.
    • Creates the proposal template and/or outline and obtains content, estimates and other inputs, as required, from the appropriate supporting groups to create a compliant and competitive proposal.
    • Reviews, edits, and provides guidance on the creation of cover letters, executive summaries, and other key parts of proposals. Takes leadership to author proposal sections that are not technically or commercially specific.
    • Maintains the CRM database with accurate and timely updates (e.g. Start Date, Price, Go/Get information, etc.)
    • Adheres to all Corporate Policies and Procedures including Compliance, Risk and Levels of Authority.
    • Manages all necessary activities to ensure that all required approvals are obtained prior to bid submission.
    • Facilitates risk workshops, together with the risk management team.
    • Facilitates high exposure, strategic, and complex proposal reviews, including Red Team, Gold Team reviews. Anticipates and mitigates potential delays to proposal submission, ultimately ensuring on-time delivery of the proposal approvals. Should the plan become ‘at-risk’, facilitates a review of the bid/no-bid decision with key necessary stakeholders. Enforces corporate-approved branding and style guidelines to ensure an appealing, high-quality, consistent look and feel for all outgoing bids.
    • Attends and Supports preparation and coordination of Bid no Bid for Major Proposals requiring Senior Leadership Team and executive approval.
    • Facilitates training and coaches other Bid Leads on preparation for proposal approvals of Higher-Level Authorities (L1 +)
    • Acts as a point of contact with strategic partners during bid development to ensure business interests are maintained, along with a winning bid approach.
    • Ensure that the companies Code of Ethics and Business Conduct is adhered to at the highest level at all times.
    • Highlight and take necessary action in the case of any potential conflicts of interest (COI); adhering to any and all project related COI disclosure requirements.
    • Leads the facilitation of the Purchase Order acceptance process. Performs cursory review of Purchase Orders for accuracy and alignment with proposals. Ensures that all comments are tracked and dispositioned, prior to confirming the transition to project initiation.
    • Conducts compliance checks/third party reviews for Bid Team, as required.
    • Works to create and improve best practices that ensure the RFP process is successful and efficient.
    • Recommends, manages and implements improvements of proposal tools and resources.
    • Supports the Manager, Bids & Strategy with presentations to Senior Management in order to obtain necessary approvals in compliance with the Levels of Authority.
    • Supports Manager, Bids & Strategy with the coordination and submission of large proposals.
    • Works with Bid Team on quality initiatives, as and when required.

  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
    • A team player with strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to influence without power.
    • Ability to manage several bids, marketing and reporting work activities concurrently under deadline pressure.
    • Excellent English composition skills to write effective proposals.
    • Fluency in French is considered an asset.
    • Advanced user in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Adobe Creative Suite including In Design (Photoshop and Illustrator a plus)
    • Strong organizational skills, work planning skills, and the ability to work with a minimum of supervision.
    • Innovation is an asset with proactive mindset to aid in improving processes.
    • Strong oral and written skills in order to interact with customers and internal staff.
    • Familiarity and knowledge of nuclear projects and engineering/technical terminology is an asset.
    • Conversant with AtkinsRéalis Nuclear’s corporate objectives, work methods, processes, procedures and organization is an asset. In the absence of nuclear sector experience, a working history and understanding of the engineering consultancy business model is a valuable asset.
    • Strong problem-solving capabilities required to tackle a wide range of unique problems.
    • Must have a solid understanding of engineering consultancy pricing models and its principles/requirements relating to treatment of risks, margins and cashflows.
  • Qualifications:
    • Combination of post-secondary education with relevant work experience, with a minimum of 8 years of specific bid management experience (of major bids in excess of $150m CAD)
    • Experience of Capture Planning.
    • APMP membership and or certification is preferred.
    • Master’s degree in business administration, management, engineering management, project management is preferred.
    • PMP certification is favored.
