The Atkins Construction Management Group is seeking a highly motivated, detail oriented, self-starter to join our Austin, TX office as a Bridge and Structural Construction Inspector.

MAJOR FUNCTION/ROLE

Under general supervision, researches and interprets contract requirements to determine whether construction work is proceeding in substantial compliance with plans, contracts, specifications and special provisions.

NOTE: Incumbents do not supervise any contractors' activities and are not responsible for job site safety.

JOB DUTIES

  • Reads contract plans, specifications, shop drawings, and regulatory agency manuals. 
  • Observes construction work such as trench excavation, pipe placement, backfill operations, pile driving, structure placement, steel reinforcement, concrete pouring, signalization and lighting, etc. 
  • Performs density and asphalt tests; samples and verifies certification of materials. 
  • Reviews shop drawings within limited area of expertise; logs and reports materials and work. 
  • Assists in directing the daily activities of less experienced staff. 
  • Performs such other duties as the supervisor may from time to time deem necessary. 


EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE
  • High school diploma (or equivalent) plus ten years related experience OR an Associates Degree in a related technical field plus eight years related experience is required.
PROFESSIONAL REGISTRATIONS
  • No Professional Registrations required. May be required to obtain certification in nuclear density, aggregate, concrete and asphalt testing or other applicable areas.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
  • Relevant TxDOT roadway, bridges and structures construction inspection experience. 
  • Experience verifying construction steel reinforcement placement, concrete placement, drill shaft/pile driving, drainage structure placement, subgrade and base construction, signalization, CTMS, lighting, etc.
  • Experience interpreting testing of soil density, concrete, asphalt and other construction materials.
  • Experience interpreting TxDOT roadway construction plans, specifications and special provisions.
  • Experience resolving differences in interpretation of construction plans and/or specifications.
  • Experience working with TxDOT 2014 specifications.
  • Experience performing SW3P inspection and preparing documentation requirements.
  • Experience compiling and maintaining SW3P working plan set.
  • Experience performing barricade and signs inspections to ensure compliance with TxDOT and TMUTCD standards. 
  • Experience monitoring construction phasing and TCPs.
  • Experience performing field measurements to develop pay quantities and pay sheets for actual work completed by the Contractor.
  • Experience using TxDOT SiteManager to record daily activity of work in progress and status of completion.
  • Experience assisting with the preparation of monthly estimates and resolving un-installed pay work.
  • Experience developing quantities calculations for change orders.
