The role

We are currently seeking a Chief Engineer in our South Wales office in Cardiff to drive the delivery and maintain technical excellence on a wide variety of multi-disciplinary highway projects across the UK. Using your excellent people, project management, technical and delivery skills, you’ll deliver a variety of civil designs for new build, renewal, maintenance and assessment works.

You’ll be working as part of one of the largest transportation consultancies in the UK, and a leading supplier of engineering services to government, regulatory and local authorities, infrastructure owners and operators. Major clients include Welsh Government, Highway England, local authorities, design and build contractors and other niche clients. You’ll also have the opportunity to work on overseas projects and with our internationally based design teams.

Within the role you will lead the delivery of Civil Engineering projects and Civil Engineering input into complex, multi-disciplinary projects as Project Director, Project Manager or Technical lead. You will look to identify future opportunities for the business and will lead on tenders for Atkins as part of a team working in collaboration with other organisations such as other design organisations or contractors.
 
The team

Our Project Delivery practice within our Transportation division provides support and guidance to the whole of Transportation in project management, project controls and quality and technical assurance. Project Delivery leads on our portfolio of major projects within both Strategic Rail & Highways. This includes functional leadership and standards for how we govern our projects.

Atkins’ Transportation is our centre of excellence for the design of highway and rail infrastructure projects. We aim to be the first choice designer for local and national highway authorities, Network Rail, contractors and developers.


Requirements

You’ll have a background in the design and delivery of a range of highway and infrastructure schemes. You’ll be experienced in the management of large, geographically dispersed multidisciplinary design teams on projects at varying stages of development from feasibility to detailed design and construction design support.

You’ll be a natural leader who’s used to rolling up your sleeves up to ensure our teams always delivers great things. Instinctively motivated to help, achieve and go beyond to meet and exceed client expectations.

Essential criteria

• A degree in civil engineering or relevant discipline
• Chartered status and corporate membership of the ICE
• Experienced in Project Governance and Development Processes
• Thorough comprehension of relevant design standards

Desirable

• Knowledge of business models adopted in the sector and commercial and technical risks
• Experience of Local Public Inquiries relating to highway schemes
• Experience of client engagement and business development activities
