If you are an experienced nuclear safety engineer and would like to lead the growth and development of our Nuclear Safety Case team then we would love you to join us. We are after someone who thrives on making a strong personal contribution and working collaboratively with colleagues and clients to create solutions that enhance the reputations of themselves, our business and our clients.
We will want you to take a lead role in a range of projects, supporting both existing and new assets in the Defence Nuclear domain. The assets include mechanical handling, infrastructure and mobile equipment. In addition to this, you will be expected to deliver innovative consultancy advice to core clients and to work with colleagues in the civil nuclear industry to share resources and best practice.
Does this sound like you? In which case, we’d love you to apply for this role.
The Team
Atkins play a key role in sustaining existing and developing new facilities and infrastructure across the defence nuclear enterprise. We are therefore seeking individuals to join us in delivering key facilities, systems and components across a variety of projects.
Working within our ADS&T business, you will be in a unique position of being able drive the development of our existing nuclear safety capability across some fantastic, inspirational projects. From our offices we are involved in developing innovative, practical solutions for our clients across the UK and further afield.
With existing relationships with the major operators in the defence sector, we offer a stimulating variety of work, within a team which is rapidly developing to meet the challenge of defence nuclear.
Whilst your office base will be in Bristol, Silchester or Glasgow, flexibility in work location is a must – from time to time our clients do call on our team to deliver work from their sites.
The Role
We are seeking an experienced engineer to lead and grow our nuclear safety capability. The primary responsibilities for the role include:
• Leading the strategic oversight of ADS&T’s nuclear safety technical capability.
• Developing and growing the nuclear safety capability within ADS&T
• Integrating with the wider Atkins/SNC Lavalin nuclear community
• Providing technical governance for nuclear safety related bids and deliverables.
• Providing support to the business in growing existing workstreams and developing new workstreams.
• Promoting “Thought Leadership” and positioning of Atkins as a recognised technical voice in the industry.
Essential Criteria
• Proven record of delivering technically challenging projects.
• Strong background in safety case production and hazard analysis, with extensive experience within the nuclear and defence industry.
• Leadership of technical teams and development of both junior and senior staff.
• Sound commercial acumen.
• Strong interpersonal skills.
• Willingness to travel to clients’ sites around the country to assist in winning new work and delivering current projects.
• A desire to be challenged and to contribute to the success of the business.
• Honours Degree (or equivalent) in physics, mechanical engineering or closely related discipline (2:1 minimum), and preferably a Fellow Level Engineer with an applicable engineering Institution.
• Flexibility on work location is a pre-requisite, with a willingness to undertake secondments to other sites beneficial.
The Person
You will be someone who is looking to make the next step in their career and make a major contribution to growing our business. You will be hungry to grow your knowledge and experience and be someone who thrives in a fast-paced but supportive environment.
You will enjoy approaching things in different ways to find the best possible fit – you like making improvements and consider different approaches, trying to find the best approach to fit whatever is the current context. As soon as you’re presented with a problem, you are focused on how to resolve it, whatever it might be.
You don’t just tackle these things alone. You like to engage with others, and especially enjoy watching people develop and grow in the team. You enjoy explaining complex ideas, helping people to ‘get it’, and then watch them go on and achieve more.
Building and developing relationships is a key part of this role. You enjoy getting to know people and working out how you can have a positive impact on them – whether that’s delivering something that a client needs or helping someone to progress within the organisation.
About Us
This is an exciting time for us, we are diversifying our portfolio, while also continuing to grow our services in the Defence sector in the UK. As part of a larger SNC Lavalin global business, there will be opportunities to develop your skills and experience in the UK working across all our clients and for international travel and, in particular, in our adjacent civil nuclear sector that is involved in the design of the new generation of nuclear power stations in the UK.
We will develop you through a portfolio of training and development activities designed to help you make the best of your abilities and talents. We will encourage you to participate in all forms of training and have an active programme of in-house and well as external training for all our engineers.
We will support you with flexible working and equal opportunities as we believe that diverse teams provide the best mix of interpersonal and technical skills needed to exceed our customers’ expectations.
Please refer to our website for full details of our benefits package, which includes the opportunity to purchase up to 15 days additional annual leave per year on top of our standard 25 days paid annual leave
