The Role

We are looking for a Chief Well Engineer to lead the technical delivery of our well engineering services currently deployed in the gas storage and O&G markets. The individual will:
Use your knowledge and experience of wells to lead the development of solutions to complex technical issues, communicating these solutions to clients and managing them through to implementation.
Technical assurance of well services ensuring the solutions delivered by the wells team are both technically excellent, commercially viable and aligned with the latest health and safety requirements.
Cultivate strong working relationships with our existing clients to consolidate the services we provide and develop these into a wider Atkins offering.
Working with the Market Lead, develop business with new clients to secure the future pipeline of the wells team and develop the wider business case for continued growth of the team.
Manage competency of the well engineering team to ensure that they are appropriately skilled and experienced for both the services currently provided and also those that may be required to support the markets in future.
Act as a figure head for the well engineering team where they will actively participate in industry panels and represent Atkins as our Technical Authority.

The individual will work within our UK Energy business, predominantly based in our Glasgow / Bellshill offices however it is expected that the individual will have flexibility to work at client sites upon request.

Fundamentally this individual will be required to be an expert in their field with a proven track record in leading the resolution of complex technical issues. The individual will oversee the development of solutions to these, integrating both sound engineering knowledge and practice with an expert understanding of technical and safety risk implications.

The person

You will have led engineering works on a variety of projects and be able to demonstrate where you have used both technical and leadership abilities to deliver to successful completion.

You will also have a strong interest in the Energy market with a good understanding of salt cavern storage and UK O&G assets.

Requirements

Qualifications

  • Degree qualified in a relevant engineering discipline
  • Chartered Engineer
Essential Criteria
  • Extensive experience working in a senior technical role
  • Extensive expertise in well engineering (design, construction or operation), including:
-well equipment
-well intervention equipment
-suspension and abandonment requirements
-drilling, side-tracking, completions
  • Extensive expertise of well interventions (planning, preparing and implementing),
  • Understanding of fluid mechanics, including High Pressure Pumping operations,
  • Extensive expertise in the review/authorisation of Risk Assessments for operations.
  • Expert understanding of subsurface maintenance requirements including:
-Different testing techniques
-Management of isolations
-Interfaces with stakeholders (e.g. IWE, HSE, operations)
  • Demonstrable experience in the supervision of teams including:
-Home office engineering
-Onsite operations
-Use of Safe Systems of Work
  • Demonstrable engineering experience and an excellent understanding of project delivery.
  • Knowledge of applicable regulations including (but not limited to):
-Borehole Regulations,
-DCR (offshore installation and wells – design and construction)
-Health and Safety at Work Act.
-COMAH
-CDM
-PUWER,
-LOLER
  • Excellent understanding of gas storage technology and plant;
  • An interest in emerging fields of energy engineering and technology (e.g. subsurface energy storage such as Shale, Hydrogen or CAES);
  • Demonstrable experience in supporting development of industry (e.g. development of technical papers and presenting to industry bodies);
  • Ability to understand a wide range of processes through review of P&IDs, operating instructions, etc and to be able to communicate this to a variety of levels within a client organisation;
  • Ability to work with multi-disciplinary teams and develop solutions to solve complex and high impact problems;
  • Understanding of the stages in an engineering project – applicable both to plant upgrade/modification and the implementation of a major new plant installation;
  • Commitment to the application of quality assurance and safety standards;
  • High level of communication skills, both written and verbal, and experienced in creating and presenting technical reports;
  • Capable and confident of building and maintaining strong business relationships with internal and external stakeholders;
  • The self-motivation to perform without close supervision;
  • Positive outlook and approachable manner;
  • Drive and ambition to help us create a market leading business;
  • Flexibility to travel and work from client sites for long duration assignments.
Desirable Criteria
  • Fellowship of accredited body;
  • Experience of working with geographically dispersed teams or working as part of multi-company partnerships and managing supply chains;
  • IWCF Interventions or Drilling Level 4
