Atkins is seeking an energetic and highly motivated self-starter to join our San Diego, California Office as an Civil Engineer - Public Works, who will support staff performing work for public works agencies, and water and wastewater clients in the greater San Diego and Orange County areas, including planning and civil engineering design related to public works, water and wastewater infrastructure.


Under supervision, the Civil Engineer - Public Works, will have opportunities to apply and develop his/her technical professional proficiencies to the investigation of engineering problems, supporting the coordination of project activities, and in the preparation of preliminary plans and documents.

On design assignments, the Civil Engineer - Public Works, will progress towards learning how to clearly convey the design intent through engineering drawings and specifications. On engineering and planning assignments, continue to develop a knowledge of the fundamentals of engineering processes and to apply them successfully to operating systems while on construction assignments, continue to develop an understanding of construction methods and the translation of engineering plans and specifications into a constructed product.



As an Civil Engineer - Public Works the candidate will apply standard engineering practices and techniques which may include the following:

Assisting in the planning, design, and production of engineering drawings.


Design of roadways, sanitary sewers, water distribution systems, storms sewers, site grading, hydrology and stormwater management, and erosion and sediment control.  Note that previous experience in these areas is a plus but not a requirement.

Providing support with specific assignments in preparing and assembling drawings and specifications

Participating in conducting engineering investigations and planning work by completing specified tasks. Tasks may include collection and analysis of data using established procedures, performing site visits, performing routine calculations, and participating in evaluating the feasibility of alternate solutions.

Performing various drafting and CAD assignments

Assisting in the preparation of graphic displays and presentation materials

Preparing assigned sections of reports working under the close review of a more experienced professional

Upholding engineering ethics and professional standards of conduct


B.S. in Engineering. Minimal experience is required of incumbents with a Bachelor’s Degree in a branch of Engineering directly related to the hiring discipline; no experience is required with a Master’s Degree.


Good interpersonal skills, technical writing capabilities and well developed communication skills are a requirement. PC skills including Microsoft Office and AutoCAD are required. Experience with Civil 3D and Microstation a plus.


Engineer In Training (EIT) desired
