Atkins are playing a key part in resignalling and electrifying the UK railway network, having recently been successful in securing work on a number major schemes. In particular we are delivering large resignalling schemes in the south of England requiring significant 3rd rail DC electrification design.

We are seeking an experienced rail professional to act in the role of Senior Electrification ETE Design Engineer. The successful candidate will sit within our Electrification Business and will ensure the successful design and delivery of electrification work packages into a number of major resignalling framework programmes.

Please note that the salary banding for the role is between £40000 and £50000 depending on experience.

• Deliver electrification work package design into integrated re-signalling scheme programmes and providing technical consultancy services.
• Scope includes: conductor rail design, conventional and enhanced negative bonding and HV diversions and DC protection calculations
• Prepare detailed design sketches, drawings and fully integrate these with signalling designs. Prepare multi-train simulations to assess traction power loading and design outline and detailed traction power supply systems.
• Lead and Manage installation teams and contractors technically and to time, cost and quality
• Identifying, capturing and managing change & supporting new work bidding activities
• Proactively resolving ETE design and installation issues
• Providing technical support to multi-disciplinary electrification and resignalling projects
• Undertaking project technical reviews
Carry out on-site Technical Investigations
• Essential to be competent to act as ETE Design CRE for Electrification works;
• A thorough working knowledge is needed of train detection and a clear understanding of the implications to traction negative bonding.
• Essential to be competent to create and run simulation models to assess traction power supply, timetables, headways, junction margins and platform reoccupation in connection with the development of ETE systems.
• Conducting reviews for IDC’s, assurance and approval of ETE design documentation
• Engaging regularly and maintaining a good working relationships with key stakeholders including delivery partners, Network Rail Project Engineers and other Atkins disciplines at all levels
• Mentoring and assistance with the development of junior team members
• Maintaining a good understand of Atkins business standards of safety, quality and design


Requirements

We are looking for an individual with a strong and proven track record in UK rail electrification project delivery and a good understanding of how electrification interfaces with other disciplines, particularly signalling. The candidate should have drive and enthusiasm with excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to work in a team. Additionally the successful candidate will have a flexible approach to work and be prepared to travel to project and design offices at a number of locations within the UK.

The Individual

• Technical – ideally a chartered engineer or working towards chartership with significant experience of carrying out railway electrification and ETE design to CRE level. Competent in Microstation CAD and able to produce ETE designs in CAD. Will have a thorough understanding of Network Rail and other ETE design standards. Will have a good understanding of how electrification and signalling disciplines integrate. Will have a proven ability to design HV cable diversions. Will be competent to carry out DC Protection Calculations to Network Rail and other standards, will have the ability to produce mask settings for a variety of protection relays. The ability to apply technical knowledge in analysing problems and creating solutions, demonstrating attention to detail and a track record of making correct judgements when interfacing disciplines
Will be able to create multi-train simulations in connection with the development of electrification systems.
