As part of our 30-year remit to manage and improve the capital’s orbital motorway network, we deliver major improvement projects, such widening 38 miles of the M25, refurbishing tunnels and bridges, and installing hundreds of variable messaging signs and gantries, helping to maximise the use of the network and deliver more reliable journeys. We also manage the Dartford River crossing, and operate and maintain 440 kilometres of motorway providing our customer and road user with a world-class highway service.

We are currently looking for an Environmental Assistant (GIS) to join us here working out of our South Mimms, Leatherhead or Dartford depots.

Main Purpose of the Job:

·         Undertake environmental assessments on engineering schemes;

·         To support the requirement of delivering the Maintenance and Operation Environmental Management Plan (MOEMP);

·         To support the Environment Team with the management of geospatial information within the Environmental Asset Database (ArcSDE SQL Geodatabase), and AgileAssets (Asset Management System);

·         To ensure submissions of Environmental Asset Inventory and Environmental Management Information  to Highways England databases are completed as required.


Key Responsibilities/Duties:


Environmental Activities:

·         To programme and assist with field surveys and site inspections,

·         Manage the Air Quality Monitoring surveys

·         Undertake environmental assessments

·         Assist with the production of annual MOEMP reports (e.g. AQMP, SWOP, CHAMP)

·         Lead on the organisation of the annual Environmental Forum

·         To assist with reporting on all other environmental indicators

·         Review of Toolbox Talks and Environmental Procedures

·         To undertake other Environmental Team tasks as required including assisting with the maintenance of the Environmental Management System

·         Respond to official correspondence (E.g. Technical Queries)

·         Respond to Freedom of Information requests


GIS Activities:

·         Manage environmental geospatial information using ArcGIS Desktop/Pro, Online and Collector, including the Asset Management System

·         Management of Soft Estate mobile inspection software (ArcGIS Collector)

·         To update and maintain the Environmental Asset Database (GIS) with survey findings (EMI), e.g. record both proposed and completed works to the Soft Estate

·         Collation of Soft Estate Condition Scores and calculation/production of ACCP

·         Creation of AMFP GIS data

·         Ensure quarterly EnvIS data submissions to Highways England are completed as required

·         GIS data cleansing as required

·         Map production and assistance with Environmental Designated Funding

·         Ad hoc GIS Training to Environment Team

·         Support the production of the GIS Budget

·         Data Management of Environmental and third party mapping datasets

·         Environmental Mapping – e.g. vulnerable sites, flooding hotspots, litter/fly tipping

·         Attend quarterly meetings with Esri


Working Arrangements (Need for travel etc.):

·         Current UK driving licence

·         Significant level of travel around M25 network


Qualifications / Skills / Experience:

·         Bachelor’s degree or higher in an environmental, geography or related subject

·         Understanding of the Environmental Impact Assessment process

·         Knowledge of ISO14001 and Environmental Management Systems

·         Experience using GIS, related geospatial technology, the creation and publication of GIS content via web services, creation of web maps and web applications as well as GIS systems integration and implementation:

o   Esri ArcGIS Desktop, QGIS, MapInfo, AutoCAD Map3D

o   ArcGIS Server

o   ArcSDE

o   ArcGIS Online

o   ArcGIS Collector

·         Understanding of the use of Geodatabases

·         Understanding of Data Management strategies and standards

·         Basic programming and query language experience (e.g. Javascript, Python, Arcade, SQL, VB)

·         Able to use cartographic, GIS and data visualisation skills

·         Some industry experience preferable but not mandatory

·         Competent in Microsoft Office Applications
