We are currently looking to appoint a confident individual to join our growing Contaminated Land and Hydrogeology (CL&H) practice based in Whitehaven. The vacancy is for someone who:

  • is confident working in a team and independently; 
  • proven experience of organisation and management of contaminated land site investigation and qualitative / semi-quantitative risk assessment;
  • combines excellent organisational, technical, numerical and communication skills to demonstrate logical thinking and concise reporting;
  • experience of liaison with clients and subcontractors;
  • is highly motivated and proactive, with demonstrable energy, drive and enthusiasm; and
  • has an innovative nature with problem-solving skills.

The Contaminated Land & Hydrogeology (CL&H) Practice within Atkins is a well-established, award winning, multi-disciplinary, environmental and engineering practice with an extensive portfolio of regeneration and development projects and a highly skilled team; notably with staff winning various awards over the past years. 

CL&H provides support to a number of the largest UK-based and international infrastructure projects; examples include Crossrail, Humber Crossing, East West Rail, Milburn Gate Durham and Newcastle Gateway. In addition, we work on a number of national frameworks with some of the UK’s most knowledgeable clients managing land contamination liabilities on complex and challenging brownfield sites. Our client and project base is highly diverse working with public and private sector clients on projects in the nuclear new build sector, oil and gas sector, regeneration and redevelopment of brownfield land, and major road, rail and aviation infrastructure projects. 

As a member of our team you will be involved in range of office- and site-based projects, working with our experienced staff to deliver excellence to our clients, and will work closely with a wide range of other professionals to deliver holistic solutions to environmental and engineering problems. 

Responsibilities

  • Organisation, collation and assessment of desk-based information as part of Phase 1 Desk Studies.
  • Developing conceptual site models and carrying out qualitative and semi-quantitative risk assessments for human health, controlled waters and property receptors under guidance.
  • Assisting in design of Phase 2 site investigations and preparation of commercial offers. 
  • Organising Phase 2 site investigation and monitoring works, including client liaison and contractor supervision, soil sampling and ground gas/vapour/groundwater/surface water monitoring/sampling or supporting others in contractor management, liaison and supervision. 
  • Management of own work, including technical delivery, management of finances, and programme delivery. Potentially managing small project teams and/or mentoring junior staff.
  • Compliance with Health and Safety Policies and Procedures, including preparation of H&S Plans for site investigation and managing health and safety on site.
  • Supporting senior management with bid preparation and project management to ensure projects are to delivered on-time, on budget and to quality and client expectation.
  • Working with the local and wider Atkins team in advancing local and national projects.
  • Developing own competence and maintain CPD necessary to fulfil the responsibilities of the role, with support from the business on own training and development needs.

Requirements

Qualifications

  • Degree qualified in a geoscience subject (e.g. geology, geotechnics, hydrogeology).
  • Masters qualified in a relevant specialism preferred, but not essential.
  • Actively working towards chartership with a relevant professional body.

Essential Criteria

  • Demonstrate good, relevant site characterisation/ land contamination/ brownfield land experience in Phase 1 Desk Studies and Phase 2 Site Investigations.
  • Experience of managing a range of site investigations.
  • Experience of technical report writing and be able to draft technical reports under guidance and of acceptable technical quality.
  • Knowledge and understanding of conceptual site models and the qualitative/semi-quantitative risk assessment process for controlled waters, human health and property receptors.
  • Familiarity with relevant codes of practice and industry standards, and broad understanding of environmental legislation.
  • Ability and willingness to travel throughout the UK and work on short term assignments.
  • Full UK driving licence.

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience of working on nuclear licensed sites.
  • Relevant H&S training, e.g. CSCS, CITB Site Supervisors Safety Training Scheme, IOSH managing safely, radiological worker training.
  • Experience in supervising field hydraulic testing and interpretation of test data.
  • Experience in numerical modelling of groundwater (ideally with experience in MODFLOW and/or FEFLOW)
  • Experience in qualitative and quantitative controlled waters risk assessment (ideally with experience in common analytical modelling packages such as P20, ConSim, RAM)
  • Experience in management of geophysical investigations.
