Atkins Transportation Division covers all aspects of multidisciplinary design and management from inception to options appraisal through to detailed scheme design and delivery support. Atkins is one of the UK’s leading multi-disciplinary consultancies engaged in numerous high profile projects for Clients in both the Public and Private Sector.

Atkins’ Transportation Consultancy Practice comprises of over 900 staff delivering planning, technical and advisory consultancy services to a wide-ranging client base in the UK and overseas. We are part of a larger Transportation business of 3,750 talented professionals covering highway, rail and local transport sectors in the UK & Europe.

We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Transport Economist/Planner to join our well established, large and dynamic transport planning team based in Birmingham City Centre.

We are looking for a skilled individual with experience in delivering and managing transport planning projects involving economic appraisal, business case and cost benefit analysis. You will work part of a wider team analysing and appraising the impact of transport schemes and preparing business cases to justify investment.

Working together with the wider team, you will be responsible for ensuring that economic and business case projects are delivered on time and to a high standard. The role would suit a highly motivated and skilled individual with good attention to detail who can be flexible and to undertake a range of different tasks. 

Key elements of this role include:
• Business case development
• Transport scheme appraisal
• Application of WebTAG and other appraisal guidance
• Wider economic and productivity impact assessments
• Data analysis and interpretation
• Scheme evaluation and prioritisation
• Spreadsheet/database modelling
• Proposal/bid writing
• Report writing / Presentations
• Project/client management
• Management / mentoring of junior staff


Essential criteria
The successful candidate will have the following:

• Degree in a relevant subject for example Mathematics, Geography, Economics, Civil Engineering, Transport Planning etc.
• Experience of delivering road and/or public transport studies
• Solid capability in applying transport economic appraisal techniques, tools and guidance, including extensive experience of WebTAG
• Strong experience in all areas of business case development, in line with the HM Treasury Green Book
• Experience of spreadsheet/database modelling
• Strong understanding of modelling / assessment tools and their outputs, such as TUBA, QUADRO, COBALT, SATURN, VISUM etc.)
• Experience of managing projects and clients
• Experience of proposal writing and work winning
• Excellent analytical, numeracy and problem-solving skills
• Excellent organisational, time and budget management skills
• Strong data analysis and report writing skills
• Ability to communicate effectively with others
• Ability to work effectively within a team

Desirable criteria
• Wider experience of delivering/managing transport planning projects e.g. development planning, modelling, policy and research etc.
• Understanding / appreciation of PDFH
• Experience of statistical analysis / programming and data analysis using GIS packages such as ArcGIS, QGIS or MapInfo software
• Chartered Engineer or other relevant professional accreditation (Chartered Membership)

The successful candidate will join our friendly and ambitious Transport Planning team in Birmingham, consisting of over 40 staff.
