Atkins Transportation Division covers all aspects of multidisciplinary design and management from inception to options appraisal through to detailed scheme design and delivery support. Atkins is one of the UK’s leading multi-disciplinary consultancies engaged in numerous high profile projects for Clients in both the Public and Private Sector.

Atkins’ Transportation Consultancy Practice comprises of over 900 staff delivering planning, technical and advisory consultancy services to a wide-ranging client base in the UK and overseas. We are part of a larger Transportation business of 3,750 talented professionals covering highway, rail and local transport sectors in the UK & Europe.

Atkins has an exciting opportunity for an experienced Transport Planner to join our well established, large and dynamic transport planning team based in Birmingham City Centre. We are looking for a skilled individual with experience in delivering and managing transport planning projects, including the development of transport strategies and policy covering a wider range of modes.

This is an exciting time to join our team. Our future workload is growing alongside current projects such as Solihull Corridor Strategy studies, transport planning input to Air Quality Zone studies for various local authorities in the region, and travel behavioural change studies and delivery. We also have several staff working within Midlands Connect, producing business cases for major highway and rail interventions across the Midlands. Working together with the wider team, you will be responsible for ensuring that strategy and policy projects are delivered on time and to a high standard. The role would suit a highly motivated and skilled individual with good attention to detail who can be flexible and to undertake a range of different tasks.

Key elements of this role include:
• Development of transport strategy and businesses cases
• Development of bus / park & ride strategies
• Development of multi-modal transport strategies
• Stakeholder Engagement and Public Consultation in support of the planning and delivery of major infrastructure projects
• Proposal/bid writing
• Report writing / Presentations
• Project/client management
• Management / mentoring of junior staff


Essential criteria
The successful candidate will have the following:
• Degree in a relevant subject for example Geography, Civil Engineering, Transport Planning etc.
• Public transport strategy experience
• Extensive knowledge of national economic and/or transport policy, including approaches to funding;
• Ability to provide quality written policy advice and analysis;
• Knowledge of the UK political system at national and local levels;
• Experience of managing projects and clients
• Experience of proposal writing and work winning
• Excellent analytical, numeracy and problem-solving skills
• Excellent organisational, time and budget management skills
• Strong data analysis and report writing skills
• Ability to communicate effectively with others
• Ability to work effectively within a team

Desirable criteria

• Wider experience of delivering/managing transport planning projects e.g. development planning, modelling, policy and research etc.
• Experience of statistical analysis / programming and data analysis using GIS packages such as ArcGIS, QGIS or MapInfo software
• Chartered Engineer or other relevant professional accreditation (Chartered Membership)

The successful candidate will join our friendly and ambitious Transport Planning team in Birmingham, consisting of over 40 staff.
