Atkins Nuclear Solutions US is currently seeking a Field Operator  to join the nuclear team in Aiken, SC. 

JOB SUMMARY

 

 

Performs a wide range of facility, equipment and machine operations associated with an site/program/ project/function and or facility process(es). Ensures compliance with policies and procedures and with local, state and federal regulations. Performs operations work as part of a team of semi-skilled and skilled workers (e.g., laborers; decontamination workers; and facility, equipment and process operators).

 

JOB DESCRIPTION

 

 

Operates a variety of equipment: (1) hand and power tools; (2) small, fixed-facility (light) equipment; (3) medium weight equipment; (4) heavy equipment and (5) cranes. Decontaminates equipment, machinery and work areas.  Uses equipment to perform construction, demolition, material handling, waste treatment and soil remediation work. These tasks are necessary to maintain a healthy and productive workforce, to ensure smooth company operations and to ensure customer requirements are met.

 

Monitors and operates equipment using normal, abnormal and emergency operating procedures. Operates equipment within the bounds of the Documented Safety Analysis (DSA) as applicable.

 

Operates equipment under the direction of a Test Engineer, the Test Operations manager or a Shift Operations Manager in support of testing, commissioning and operations as applicable, according to location.

 

Works under the direction of the Operations Foreman as applicable, according to location.

 

Complies with all local, state and federal health and safety regulations and site health and safety requirements

 

Complies with all requirements for wearing personal protective equipment while performing job duties

 

Participates in procedure development and revision, job hazard analysis and safety walkdowns as applicable

 

Uses a variety of medium weight equipment to perform waste handling and treatment operations

 

Operates power-driven equipment of medium weight and horsepower such as trucks, skip loaders, mixer trucks, backhoes, tractor/trailer combinations, motor sweepers, power mowers, wood chipping machines, hoists/forklifts, loaders, water and rock trucks and small rollers. Reports the need for major mechanical adjustments and repairs

 

Uses machines and equipment to remove, package, store, treat and transport loads of waste materials

 

Performs cask unloading, hauling and handling tasks

 

Performs field cask leak testing activities

 

Inspects shipment rigging and assists in hooking slings/wire rope to crane rigging/hook(s)

 

Helps secure containers. Determines when containers are secure and meet Department of Transportation regulations

 

Measures, marks and records openings and distances to layout areas where construction work will be performed

 

Loads, unloads and identifies building materials, machinery and tools and distributes them to the appropriate locations in accordance with project plans and specifications

 

May perform the work of an Operator 1 or 2 as required

 

May lead and direct the work of an Operator 1 or 2

 

May provide training to an Operator 1 or 2 as needed and reviews the work of others as needed

 

Performs other duties as assigned.



 

 



JOB REQUIREMENTS

Strong listening skills.

Basic written, verbal and organizational skills.

Normal vision (with or without correction).

Strong interpersonal skills and team player attitude.

General knowledge of local, state and federal health and safety regulations [e.g., Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)].

Ability to understand and apply health and safety regulations and requirements.

Ability to read computer screens and printed documents and to operate small equipment.

Basic computer skills, including the ability to operate equipment using HMI.

Ability to comprehend procedure and work package instructions as applicable.

Ability to successfully pass a fundamentals entry examination as applicable.

Ability to complete the Salt Waste Processing Facility Operator training program as applicable.

Ability to perform physically demanding work.

Ability to work in extreme weather conditions and environments wherein there is exposure to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, noxious odors, gases, chemicals and mechanical and electrical hazards.

 

Ability to lift up to 50 lb and wear a respirator.

Strong attention to detail.

Detailed knowledge of facility processes, operations and equipment.

Detailed knowledge of machine construction, maintenance and deconstruction.

Demonstrated ability to perform maintenance and repairs on fixed, small-scale industrial equipment used to perform job duties.

Demonstrated ability to operate electronics and computers to diagnose and repair machines used to perform job duties.

Demonstrated ability to handle more complex work and schedule tasks assigned to Operator 1, 2 or 3 employees as appropriate.

Ability to develop and communicate work steps required to maintain and repair medium weight equipment.

Working knowledge of wastewater treatment plants and collection systems (if applicable to work performed).

Working knowledge of rigging practices (if applicable to work performed).

Working knowledge of heavy industrial equipment, machines and construction work and process operations such as batch plant, rotary and shredder operations.


EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATION

 


High School diploma or GED.

 


A minimum of 12 months of related experience as an Operator 3 or equivalent offsite experience.
 


Certification:

 


Ability to obtain applicable qualification card required (for a locomotive, excavator, compactor, bulldozer, batch plant, rotary, shredder, yardmaster or grader operator).


Valid driver’s license with a clean record required. Evidence of insurability required.


For jobs located at the Salt Waste location, must be qualified as a Salt Waste Processing Facility/Parsons Technology Center (PTC) Operator.
