SNC-Lavalin’s Atkins Business is one of the worlds leading Design, Engineering and Project Management Consultancies. We have the breadth and depth of expertise to respond to the most technically challenging and time critical infrastructure projects.

We are currently looking to appoint a confident individual to join our growing Contaminated Land and Hydrogeology (CL&H) practice based in Birmingham but would also consider candidates for our Bristol office and support our expanding project workload and client base. The vacancy is for someone who:
  • is confident working in a team and independently; 
  • proven experience of contaminated land site investigation and qualitative / semi-quantitative risk assessment;
  • combines excellent organisational, technical, numerical and communication skills to demonstrate logical thinking and concise reporting;
  • is highly motivated and proactive, with demonstrable energy, drive and enthusiasm; and
  • has an innovative nature with problem-solving skills.
The CL&H Practice is a well-established, award winning, multi-disciplinary environmental and engineering practice with an extensive portfolio of regeneration and development of brownfield sites. We have a highly skilled team; notably with staff winning Best Young Brownfield Professional at the Brownfield Briefing Awards for three consecutive years.

CL&H provides support to a number of the largest UK-based and international infrastructure projects as well as considerable brownfield regeneration experience with developer clients. In addition, we work on a number of national frameworks with some of the UK’s most knowledgeable clients managing land contamination liabilities on complex and challenging brownfield sites. Our client and project base is highly diverse working with public and private sector clients on projects in the nuclear new build sector, oil and gas sector, regeneration and redevelopment of brownfield land, and major road, rail and aviation infrastructure projects.

As a member of our team you will be involved in range of office and site-based projects, working with our large team to deliver excellence to our clients. You will also work closely with a wide range of other professionals to deliver holistic solutions to environmental and engineering problems.

Responsibilities:
  • Management and checking of Phase 1 Desk Studies.
  • Data management, development of Conceptual Site Models, and undertaking qualitative and semi-quantitative risk assessments for human health, controlled waters and property receptors. Preparation, checking and delivery of factual and interpretative reporting.
  • Design and management of combined Phase 2 Geotechnical and Geo-Environmental Ground Investigations and subsequent monitoring, including client liaison, contractor / staff management, soil sampling and ground gas/vapour/leachate/groundwater and surface water monitoring/sampling.
  • Compliance with Health and Safety Policies and Procedures, including preparation of H&S Plans and managing CDM responsibilities / health and safety on site.
  • Design, management and supervision of Earthworks, Remediation schemes, Materials Management schemes, etc.
  • Project Management including client liaison, technical delivery, management of finances, and programme delivery. 
  • Supporting senior management with bid preparation.
  • Managing and mentoring junior staff members.
  • Developing own competence and maintain CPD necessary to fulfil the responsibilities of the role, with support from the business with training and development needs.


Requirements

Qualifications

  • Degree qualified in a relevant engineering or science subject (e.g. geology, geotechnics, hydrogeology, chemistry, environmental science).
  • Masters qualified in a relevant specialism preferred but not essential.
  • Be actively working toward chartership with a relevant professional body. 
Criteria
  • A minimum a 4 years relevant post-graduate experience (ideally within a consultancy environment), able to demonstrate a good understanding of land contamination/brownfield land issues.
  • Excellent working knowledge of relevant codes of practice and industry standards and have broad understanding of general environmental legislation.
  • Excellent working knowledge of Conceptual Site Models and the qualitative/semi-quantitative Phase 1 and Phase 2 risk assessment process for controlled waters, human health and property receptors.
  • Experience of managing and supervising intrusive ground investigations using a range of site investigation techniques and mentoring junior staff.
  • Experience of MMPs, Earthworks Specifications, remediation design, validation reports and piling risk assessments. 
  • Experience or writing EIA Scoping Reports, ES chapters and PERAs.
  • Ability and willingness to travel throughout the UK and work on short term assignments overseas.
  • Full UK driving licence.
