Job Title: Global Engineering Manager

Shaping energy solutions to empower sustainable connectivity.


We combine SNC-Lavalin’s project management expertise and ABB’s deep technological knowledge to create a company dedicated to substations – we are Linxon.

Linxon is a joint venture company set up by SNC-Lavalin and ABB to turnkey electrical AC substation projects. Linxon will undertake turnkey electrical alternating current substation projects related to renewable and conventional power generation, power transmission and transportation solutions. Turnkey solutions will include project design, engineering, procurement, construction, management, commissioning and after-sales support.

Mission Statement:
As member of the global operations management team, define the strategic direction of the engineering function in line with company strategy; provide leadership, management and coordination of the engineering function across the organization.
Be the accountable owner of the technology, provided to customers through our EPC business.
Drive performance to ensure the services provided are of best in class and exceeds customer expectations with respect to safety by design, integrity of the developed solutions, on time and on quality delivery within the agreed budget.
Initiate and drive continuous improvement activities across teams.

Dimensions:
Interfaces:

Coordinate with Global Operations Manager and his functional peers in Operations. Lead the Hub Engineering Managers and Managers of the Engineering Centers and give guidance to the local Lead Engineers. Ensure that strategic direction is fully understood and is applied to the scope of supply. Work closely together with the Engineering Centers’ management teams and agree on development actions, aiming continues improvement of the full team.
Maintain good relationships and positive team spirit.

Strategy and Organizational Leadership:
Act as member of the Global operations management team providing strategic and operational guidance to support ongoing development of the business. Serve as an escalation point for individual and systemic engineering issues within the organization.

Execution:
Take oversight of engineering support provided during the bid phase and project execution, supports presentation of proposals to customers. Present new technology and innovation at conferences and client events.
Have the ability to determine the advantages and disadvantages and relative costs of alternative design concepts and establish preferred concepts. Demonstrate continual improvement in the execution of work.
Take oversight of the planning and control process in the Engineering teams. Hold regular reviews to ensure that the teams are delivering work to both the customer's and Linxon’s requirements.
Ensure highest quality of engineering outputs in line with project timelines and construction requirements, to avoid re-work and cost of poor quality.

Technical Leadership and knowledge sharing:
Develop and maintain beneficial relationships with external and internal organizations e.g. key suppliers and professional societies, to gather and share best practice and to enhance the reputation and credibility of Linxon.
Initiate and drive continuous improvement activities.
Develop, implement and improves relevant processes - aligned with Company policies - to improve efficiency and effectiveness across the engineering function.

People and personal development:
Ensures (in coordination with the Global Operations Manager and HR Manager support) that the area of responsibility is properly organized, staffed, skilled and directed.
Guide, motivate, coach and develop direct and indirect subordinates.

Direct reports are:
Functionally all engineering from the Hubs: North America (NAM), Europe, Middle East & Africa (MEA) and Asia Pacific (ASPA).


Main Accountabilities:
• Knowledge and adherence to the Company’s Code of Conduct.
• Define, jointly with the Global Operations Manager and his Peers in Operations, the target organizational set-up for Engineering globally and implement accordingly.
• Measure Engineering Quality and Lead implementation of continuous improvements for the project execution. Develop relevant processes to improve effectiveness across the engineering functions and interfaces.
• Gather information and coordinate all engineering aspects with the Hub organizations (NAM, Europe, MEA, ASPA),
• Ensure, the operative units work together effectively and well-coordinated.
• Ensure portfolio of projects is managed consistently where required methodologies and execution practices are applied.
• Initiate and drive continuous improvement activities. Identify areas of improvements and share findings within the global engineering population (lessons learnt) on a regular basis. Facilitate best practice sharing within the Engineering Team.
• Further drive development and harmonization of Engineering processes and tools through collaboration with all Linxon Hub Engineering Managers and Engineering Centers.
• Ensure resource plan is in place together with the Engineering Center’s managers.
• Provide guidance to Engineering Center’s team members in identifying and following-up scope changes and contribute actively to the project specific change management (incl. claim preparation).
• Guide and coach teams/individuals to ensure financial, quality and on-time delivery targets are met.
• Drive development of engineering/operational capabilities through training, mentoring and shadowing programs.
• Assure quality in the project deliverables. Cooperate with the Global Quality Manager (contribute to the continuous improvement of the established quality management system).
• Build and maintain good customer relationship to ensure acceptance of the Engineering Center’s concept.
• Actively seek feedback from the execution teams (site) and initiate required improvements.

Challenges:
• Mobilizing the engineering community towards change and bringing more project orientation.
• Drive Lead Engineer role to cover cost and schedule of engineering deliverables in addition to compliance of the technical solution with the contract.
• Meeting business requirements with redefined delivery models and processes.
• Driving the enforcement of the Engineering Center concept (Engineering Centers in India and Slovakia).

Knowledge, Skills, Experience:
• Degree in Electrical/Power Engineering.
• Over 10 years’ experience in Power system /substation design with focus on system design within an EPC firm price organization structure.
• Sound knowledge of transmission and distribution practices (at least up to 400kV) & Substation engineering.
• Deep understanding of full life cycle of large and complex turnkey projects involving multiple disciplines, starting from opportunity identification to project close out.
• Understanding of applications and tools for Engineering as well as for Project execution.
• Good knowledge in design for safety, HSE standard, life cycle analysis, EPD – Environmental Product Declaration.
• Language: Fluent in English (speak and write); local language is a benefit.
• General management experience for a balanced view on “optimized” engineering.
• Experience in dealing with international customers and contractors.
• Proven experience in people management.
• Good communication and interpersonal skills.
• Good team works.
• Independent working style and capable to provide guidance to team members on technical issues related to the scope of work.
• Excellent organizational and time management skills. Able to work with priorities and identify conflicts.
• Capable to communicate / discuss technical topics with technical- and none technical audiences.
• Ability to summarize meeting outcomes.
• High attention to detail and focused on quality.
• Pragmatic approach and persistence in continuous development.
