This is a vital role within our organisation supporting the Group Technical and QSSE Director in developing and maintaining the Group’s data protection framework. This role will guide all sectors of the organisation in order to ensure the protection of our clients and employees information and provide a global “centre of excellence” for the Atkins group. The role will require someone with a strongly pragmatic approach and the ability to positively influence large and diverse stakeholder groups.


Responsibilities

Duties may include but not be limited to:

Group

  • Support for the Group Company Secretary in carrying out all the responsibilities of the Group Data Protection Officer
  • Provision of a Group data protection “centre of excellence”
    • Advising on practical implementation of data protection legal requirements
    • Advising on practical implementation of the Group’s data protection framework
    • Advising on the Group’s responsibilities as a data processor of client data
  • Development and management of the Group’s data protection framework, particularly to ensure compliance with the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation
  • Providing data protection training within the Group

Systems and processes

  • Reviewing and negotiating supplier data protection contractual arrangements, including training key interested parties (e.g. Group Information Systems, Procurement) to enable them to undertake reviews and straightforward negotiations
  • Managing/undertaking supplier audits
  • Managing/undertaking privacy impact assessments

Data subjects

  • Managing and overseeing responses to data subject access requests
  • Managing/preparing/overseeing response to data subject queries

Compliance

  • Submitting notifications to data protection regulators
  • Managing/undertaking breach investigations
  • Reviewing and developing arrangements for cross-border data transfers

Requirements

  • Excellent data protection technical skills including, but not limited to:
    • Excellent knowledge of the Data Protection Act 1998
    • Excellent knowledge of the EU Data Protection Directive of 1995
    • Excellent knowledge of the EU General Data Protection Regulation 2016/679 and the EU Data Protection Directive 2016/680 and the implications for multi-national organisations
  • General understanding of global legislation
  • Practical experience of all aspects of data protection compliance including, but not limited to:
    • Notifications
    • Application of exemptions
    • Privacy impact assessments
    • Supplier contractual arrangements and audits
    • Data subject access requests
    • Breach management
    • Cross-border data transfers
    • Developing and delivering training and awareness programmes
    • Developing data protection frameworks
    • Data protection risk management
    • Drafting personal data inventories
    • Liaising with regulators
  • Practical experience of implementing data protection projects internationally
  • Excellent stakeholder management skills including, but not limited to:
    • Human Resources
    • Group information Systems (particularly the Cyber Security team and Chief Information Officer)
    • Quality, Safety, Security and Environment (“QSSE”) (particularly the Information Assurance and Security teams)
    • Senior management
  • Self-motivated, problem solving, decision making skills
  • Computer literate
  • Excellent communication skills, especially written English
  • Good interpersonal skills required (tact, honesty, integrity, confidentiality, patience and ability to get on well with all levels of staff)
  • Accuracy and attention to detail essential
  • Experience of managing time critical projects with multiple stakeholders
  • Strong knowledge & understanding of European data protection legislation, US data privacy legislation and relevant Asia Pacific legislation
  • Practical experience of developing and managing data protection frameworks for multi-national organisations

The individual

  • Certified International Privacy Professional (preferably CIPP/E but CIPP/US considered), holder of BCS the Chartered Institute for IT professional certification (formerly ISEB), holder of Practitioner Certificate in Data Protection (PC.dp) or equivalent
  • Pragmatic approach to data protection
  • Ability to prioritise and manage a large and varied workload
  • Happy working in a fast-paced environment with demanding deadlines

Location

This role could be based out of our Epsom, Birmingham, Bristol or London offices. The post-holder would be required to travel to London regularly. Possibility of travel overseas as necessary to fulfil the requirements of the role.
