Job Summary
Atkins have a long established design and engineering presence in York. Following a series of successful project wins the Atkins national signalling design and engineering team is is looking to grow and enhance its team in York. This combined with the evolving needs of our clients and in particular the challenges and opportunities presented by the NR Strategic Business Plan for Control Period 6 mean we are looking to add new leadership and energy to our design and engineering team in York by recruiting a Head of Signalling (York) to lead both the design and engineering teams.

Atkins has one of the Rail industry’s largest signalling engineering teams. You will be joining a Atkin’s Transport Systems Practice with a team of over 200 professional signalling and telecoms, designers, project engineers and engineering managers. This together with Atkins broader cross discipline capability means engineers have an unrivalled collective knowledge to tap into and learn from.

Role
This role is a senior leader within the Atkins UK Rail Signalling team. You will lead a team that comprises both designers and project engineers with responsibility for leading the growth, development and output of the team. Currently the team is comprises 9 designers / engieers. Reporting will be to the Practice Manager, Rail Signalling. This role will also be expected to undertake specific activities and roles on projects. These could include being Contractor Engineering Manager, Project design Manager or Contractor’s Responsible Engineer.

Primary functions of the role include :
• Providing leadership to, and resource managing, the York signalling engineering and design team
• Setting the safety and engineering culture for the team
• Undertaking senior engineering roles on projects (e.g. CEM, CRE, Design Manager)
• Ensuring achievement of safety, quality, schedule and cost project objectives
• Leading the engineering input to bids, developing business opportunities and building client relationships
• Actively managing allocated budgets
• Leading the capability development of the York team and supporting the collective learning of the organisation.


Requirements
Essential Qualifications and Experience
• Extensive UK signalling project engineering and / or design experience
• Extensive leadership experience
• Experience of undertaking lead project roles (e.g. DPE, CEM, CRE) on Network Rail infrastructure
• Understanding of risk management, and applying CDM and CSM

Desirable Qualifications and Experience
• Chartered Engineer
• Holds applicable IRSE Licences
• Full Member of the IRSE

This role may require security clearance and offers of employment will be dependent on obtaining the relevant level of clearance. If this is necessary it will be discussed with you at interview.
