Highways Engineer - Cities

We have a growth plan to respond to this pipeline of work and we are currently recruiting talented individuals to help deliver development planning projects for our expanding client base.  With over 300 specialists in our Transport Planning business we have the flexibility and resources to provide our clients with an extensive range of services including transport policy and strategy planning, traffic modelling, scheme appraisal, travel demand management, scheme design and development planning.

We’re seeking an ambitious Engineer to join the Epsom or Croydon Office of our South East Transport Planning Practice. We’re a successful team with a well-balanced blend of skills to face our client needs, and are looking for an enthusiastic individual to add further value to our offer to the marketplace. You will have a demonstrable track record and solid technical capability in the Traffic Engineering / Public Realm field and this is exciting opportunity that provide you with a platform to develop all aspects of your career working on projects in London and the South East region.

The design team has a wide-ranging capability, from site feasibility and masterplanning, through to planning, assessment and then detailed design and implementation. The multi-disciplinary nature of the business also means that we are able to work as part of an in-house project team to offer clients a true ‘one stop shop’ for the planning, design and delivery of development-led and infrastructure projects.

You will also have the opportunity to work with our evolving digital transport planning team which is actively developing and promoting digital innovation, through the use of gaming technologies and Virtual Reality to improve quality and efficiency of our work across various transport planning aspects.

The team also has a strong pipeline and solid presence within the marketplace. We’re involved in a number of high profile design projects with a variety of clients both in the UK and overseas and our current portfolio of works comprises a diverse mix of local, national and international development and public realm projects. We also provide specialist input to a range of strategic rail, highways, aviation and other infrastructure projects drawn from across the business. Key clients include Highways England, Network Rail, Hampshire County Council, Surrey County Council, LB Harrow, London City Airport, Heathrow Airport, Royal Borough of Kingston and The Crown Estate. 

We have a growth plan to respond to this pipeline and are expanding the physical presence of our offering in the region with office space in Epsom, Croydon and Aldershot. It’s an exciting time to join, and we welcome ambitious candidates to support in realising this growth plan.


• A Degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent

Essential Criteria
• Chartered Engineer, or can show evidence of actively working towards Chartership status
• Appropriate previous experience of design and site supervision of urban highway, transport or public realm schemes, including cycle and pedestrian schemes, high street improvements and signalised junctions.
• Working knowledge of CDM and relevant Health and Safety regulations
• Good communication skills and the ability to build and maintain client relationships and manage stakeholders
• Delivery of work in line with DMRB and MfS guidance.

Desirable Criteria 
• Experience of 3D design using AutoCAD Civil 3D is desirable
• Experience with ProjectWise 
• Working knowledge of construction contracts.

Your key responsibilities in this role will include the following:
• Working proactively and supporting project managers in the delivery of traffic engineering and public realm projects including investigations and scheme design, the preparation of drawings, scheme costs and reports
• Evaluating engineering problems and providing workable solutions which address issues during design and implementation
• Preparation of scheme drawings from feasibility design through to detailed design
• Ensuring that projects are completed to client specifications, budgets and programme
• Working with planners, traffic modellers, architects, landscape architects, master planners and clients as required on technical aspects of projects
