SNC-Lavalin’s Atkins business is one of the world’s leading Design, Engineering and Project Management Consultancies. We have the breadth and depth of expertise to respond to the most technically challenging and time critical infrastructure projects.

We are currently looking to appoint a confident Hydrogeologist to join our Contaminated Land and Hydrogeology (CL&H) practice based in Birmingham, however, for the right candidate there may be some flexibility in location with potential alternative locations, in Leeds, Bristol, London or Epsom. The vacancy is for someone who:

  • has an innovative nature with problem-solving skills. 
The Contaminated Land & Hydrogeology (CL&H) Practice is a well-established, award winning, environmental and engineering practice with an extensive portfolio of regeneration and development projects and a highly skilled team winning numerous industry awards over the years. The successful candidate will be an important part of an innovative and technically excellent team helping deliver major projects and developing the team. Atkins has a Geological Society Accredited training scheme specifically for hydrogeologists, demonstrating our commitment to staff development and training. Atkins also invests in our core technical disciplines with established technical networks for all aspects of hydrogeology which drives knowledge sharing, staff development and innovation across our practice and broader business.


Atkins’ hydrogeologists use the full range of their skills, working on water resources and land contamination projects as well as providing innovative solutions to engineering challenges. Our client and project base is highly diverse with current projects in the nuclear new build, oil and gas, regeneration and redevelopment and major road and rail sectors. We work on projects in the UK and around the world.



Responsibilities
  • Provide technical input and management of hydrogeological projects (managing delivery and technical aspects of the project), including site investigation design and interpretation, development of robust conceptual site models, controlled waters risk assessments, numerical modelling and design reports.
  • Production and checking of complex groundwater models relating to groundwater flow, contamination transport and civil engineering challenges. 
  • Preparation of relevant Environmental Impact Assessment chapters for a wide range of projects. 
  • Preparation of proposals and input into bids for multi-disciplinary infrastructure projects. 
  • Work effectively as part of a team and with other professionals (environmental scientists, engineers, planners) to provide a consistent and integrated service to our clients. 
  • Training and mentoring of junior staff and supporting the development of technical excellence. 
  • Maintain excellent professional relationships which will lead to and secure repeat business. 
  • Business Development – supporting development with clients within key strategic markets such Nuclear, Transport, Energy and Oil and Gas. 
Requirements

Qualifications
  • BSc in geology or other relevant subject (e.g. earth science or other science discipline) with 2.1 achievement or higher. 
  • MSc or PhD in hydrogeology or related subject.
  • Chartered Membership of relevant professional body (if not Chartered, we would expect the candidate, with our support, to become chartered 6 to 12 months after joining).
Criteria
  • A minimum of 5 years relevant post-graduate experience (ideally within a consultancy environment).
  • Experienced in preparing technical reports for qualitative and quantitative controlled waters risk assessment.
  • Excellent knowledge of common analytical modelling packages such as P20, ConSim, and RAM, with further experience in numerical groundwater modelling including MODFLOW, FEFLOW as well as 2-D packages such as SEEP/W.
  • Experienced in designing and managing ground investigations including managing health and safety requirements.
  • Proven experience in managing projects and small project teams to deliver work to a high standard. 
  • Excellent working knowledge and demonstrable understanding of the relevant legislation, technical guidance, industry standards and best practice.
  • Excellent communication skills and proven ability to manage time and work as part of a team as well as individual working. 
  • Good understanding of commercial issues and business development.
  • Experience in Engineering Hydrogeology and working on projects within the oil and gas or nuclear sectors would be desirable. 
  • Flexible and prepared to take on new challenges including willingness to travel and take part in overseas projects. 
  • Full UK driving licence.
