Junior Software Engineer

Atkins has a large share of the UK Rail Overhead Electrification market (OLE), which we support via our industry recognised in-house developed CAD/CAE tools TADPOLE (Tools Aiding Design and Production of Overhead Line Electrification). To build on our success in this area we have an exciting opportunity for a keen Junior Software Engineer to join our offices in Derby and to continue the development of TADPOLE within a real-life engineering environment. This will include development of geometry and other mathematical algorithms, Graphical User Interfaces and XML and Excel based data tools.

We undertake projects from feasibility through to detailed design and construction management. Our engineers are skilled in the design of OLE projects, Layout Plans, Cross sections, Switching cross sections, Section Diagrams and Bonding plans.
We have committed forward workload and a strategy to achieve growth through expanding our existing client base to provide consultancy services including outline design, detailed design, and consultancy advice.


• Work as part of a small software development team to produce technical work, as directed by the Project Manager and the OLE Software Team Leader
• Ensure that software developed is both tested, validated and documented.
• Identify with overall OLE project and practice goals and help to achieve them.
• Communicate effectively and build positive relationships with colleagues and clients
• Maintain and demonstrate strong technical competence; find new and better ways of carrying out your role.
• Help identify new software development opportunities.


• Degree (or equivalent) in Engineering or Computer Science
• A Level Maths or a high grade A-S Level in Maths (Grade A or B)
• Strong problem solving skills
• Good attention to detail
• Enthusiastic, pro-active approach
• Commitment to Software Engineering good practices
• Knowledge of Visual Basic or competence in other imperative or object oriented programming languages
• Willingness to work in Microsoft VBA and the Bentley Microstation API (These are the core technologies used by the team)
• Awareness of XML and related technologies
• Skill, knowledge or awareness of linear and vector algebra and numerical methods.

Provided you have appropriate programming competence, Atkins will support you in learning Microsoft VBA and XML technologies as necessary.
