Atkins seeks an energetic and highly motivated self-starter to join our Austin, Texas Cultural Resources Team a Laboratory Technician.
Major Function/Role:
Under supervision of a senior lab technician, scientist, or manager, process, catalog, and analyze artifacts, and prepare artifacts and records for permanent curation.
Job Description:
- Washes and catalogs artifacts.
- May perform laboratory analysis of materials found, including lithics, ceramics, bone, shell, burned rock, etc.
- Prepares artifacts for permanent curation, including labeling, re-bagging, re-tagging, and data entry.
- Maintains accurate laboratory records and maintains project filing system.
- Organizes field and laboratory records, ensures complete records labeling, and digitizes field records. Organizes, renames, and labels photographs.
- May assist with sampling, processing, and analysis of special samples, such as flotation samples.
- May assist with proposals, scopes-of-work and budgets, artifact analysis write-ups, and report writing, as required.
- May assist with maintaining tools and equipment in good order.
- May perform such other duties as the Supervisor may from time to time deem necessary.
- May assist in fieldwork, including survey, testing, monitoring, and excavation.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s in Archaeology, Anthropology or closely related field.
- Archaeology Field School may be required.
- At least 6 months experience with artifact processing, cataloging, artifact analysis, and/or labeling is preferred. Knowledge of and experience with curation standards in Texas and other states’ curatorial facilities is preferred.
- Knowledge of applicable state and federal requirements, especially the Texas Antiquities Code and Section 106, preferred.
- Math skills to perform calculations, following established formulas.
Special Skills:
Knowledge of archaeological survey, excavation and laboratory methods as required by the project. Ability to examine and evaluate the condition of artifacts, describe facts and events accurately. Ability to communicate technical information effectively, and establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
Additional Requirements:
Requirements typically include: ability to work outdoors in varying temperatures and weather conditions, walk long distances, stoop, and squat; ability to observe excavated materials and distinguish/catalogue artifacts. If position requires driving a company vehicle, incumbent must have valid driver’s license and a driving record that meets company policy.
