The ATKINS Global Design Centre (GDC) – Nuclear Energy team delivers challenging projects on a number of key nuclear workstreams including the UK reactor cores and high integrity structures for existing nuclear establishments.

We are looking for an outstanding candidate to join the mechanical design and analysis team within our nuclear business for the long term project – GCORE (relates to the graphite core of the Advanced Gas-cooled Reactors). The work diet will focus predominantly on design, substantiation and integrity assessment of systems under static and dynamic loads, delivering projects locally and remotely


Joining the highly energetic and competent team in ATKINS GDC gives the engineer the opportunity to get exposed to advanced methodologies and technologies by getting actively involved in technically challenging projects. This could include building and running finite element (FE) models, producing calculations, automation tools, generating summary sheets, authoring and updating technical documents which supports ATKINS Quality Assurance process.


The Design and Analysis engineer - Nuclear will take ownership of their tasks and project deliveries against time, cost and quality requirements whilst maintaining the highest quality of work to meet the client’s expectations.


Degree qualified in a Mechanical engineering and with Design and Analysis experience in engineering industry ( B.Tech with a minimum 3 years of industry experience or M.Tech with a minimum of 2 years of industry experience).

  • Static, dynamic stress analysis
  • Finite element analysis
  • Non-linear static analysis
  • Dynamic analysis (modal analysis, explicit dynamics)
  • Choice of appropriate level of modelling detail
  • Mechanical design and assessment
  • Structural integrity assessment including fatigue and Damage Tolerance 
  • Experience in Finite element modelling with Hypermesh
  • Candidate is working towards professional certification as Incorporated Engineer or Chartered Engineer 

Essential Criteria

Demonstrable experience in the following disciplines:

Demonstrable experience with application of FE software, classical methods and Programming aspects like

o   Finite Element analysis (preferably using ABAQUS)

o   Classical hand calculation methods

o   Programming (preferably using VBA / Python scripts)


Also, the engineer should have

o   Good oral and written communication skills with a proven ability to write accurate, detailed and concise quality technical reports (e.g. design substantiations, basis of analysis, safety case support)

o   A track record with solving complex structural integrity and design problems and associated quality assurance.

Desirable Criteria

Experience in nuclear industry and knowledge of nuclear systems (including safety cases) is desirable but not essential.



·         Working under the Technical Lead, understanding technical requirements, owning their individual tasks ensuring an efficient and effective delivery.

·         Performing FE analysis and performing analytical calculations with classical methods

·         Authoring technical specifications and stress analysis reports.

·         Ensuring that deliverables are produced in line with Atkins and client’s technical and quality requirements.

·         Recognising and responding appropriately to project technical challenges.

·         Working with innovative ideas and developing the continuous improvement to improve efficiency

·         Capturing lessons learnt and ensuring that they are widely shared / communicated.

Project specific training will be given on the job for non-energy experience individuals by technical leads.
