The Role
Our Energy business has been operating for over four decades and the pace of change has never been greater than it is now. These are critical times in how the world generates and uses Energy. Our Design and Engineering team is key to the multi-disciplinary design and assurance services that we provide to our Clients in the Renewables, Conventional Generation, Oil & Gas, Energy from Waste, Energy Storage and Petrochemical Markets.

As a Metallurgist working at our office and laboratories near Glasgow you will be working within the Energy UK and Europe team. The role includes the provision of Operation and Maintenance support to fossil-fired, nuclear and renewable power plant, and other industrial assets. Responsibilities will extend to applying your competencies across the Atkins Energy business and in other industry sectors.

The key components of your role may include:
• Carrying out metallurgical failure investigations, material condition assessments and materials testing, both in the laboratory and at power stations and other industrial sites.
• The development and application of inspection-based and risk-based methodologies and component assessment techniques to support safe operation of plant.
• Provision of materials advice to clients in the Energy sector and across other areas of Atkins businesses.
• Corrosion investigations and review of corrosion protection systems for operators of process plant and offshore structures.
• Undertake portfolio of metallurgical investigations and related projects, both laboratory-based and at industrial sites, with minimal supervision.
• Prepare risk-based and inspection-based assessment schedules for power plant components.
• Preparation of technical reports.
• Liaise with clients (internal and external) on all aspects of project cycle.
• Assist in the preparation, management and completion of plant overhaul outage projects.
• Assist Group Lead in developing new services and business opportunities.
The ideal candidate will be expected to carry out laboratory metallurgical testing to support investigations, to prepare technical communications to a high standard and to communicate findings effectively to engineers and technical staff in related disciplines.

In addition to having excellent communication and problem solving skills you will be able to demonstrate the following:
• Qualified to degree level in metallurgy, materials science, mechanical engineering with materials or corrosion engineering.
• Member of professional institute, Chartered Engineer or working towards chartered status.
• Advantageous to have experience in some or all of the following areas:- power plant O&M, high temperature boiler materials, turbine steels, degradation and failure mechanisms of metallic materials, corrosion mechanisms, corrosion protection systems, laboratory and on-site material inspection/analysis techniques.
• Experience of successfully interfacing with clients.
• Knowledge and experience of key issues relating to commercial project delivery.
• Demonstrable record of ability to work well within a technical team.
• Ability to work flexibly, on their own initiative, and to take ownership of their designated projects. Ability to deliver technical tasks to tight timescales and within budget limits.
• Good analytical and reasoning skills.
• Good communication skills; strong aptitude in the preparation of written communications including technical reports.

Additional Information

• Some work outside normal office hours may be necessary. Travel to and from client sites and/or temporary secondment to client’s offices may also be required.
