Network Engineering is a part of the Atkins Unified Communications Services team focusing on all aspects of data networking. 


 

  • It strives to ensure that Atkins benefits from developments in network technology and that the Atkins network is fit for purpose. 
  • It provides design and support services for Atkins Group IS in general and the Network Operations Team in particular.

 

These result in a highly diverse range of duties for the Network Engineer. While they are expected to have CCIE/CCNP certifications and can demonstrate 6+ years of progressive experience in large enterprises it is more important that they have a passion for networking, a drive to investigate new developments.

Job Details

 

Responsibilities

  • Provide an escalation point for the Network Operations Centre
  • Scope, plan, design, build, and implement new network capabilities and to hand over to the Network Operations Centre for BAU running.
  • Keep abreast of developments in networking and network monitoring.
  • Work with the Network Operations Centre Manager to identify opportunities for improving effectiveness through streamlining processes, knowledge sharing and automation.
  • Production of technical documentations, network diagrams, processes and procedures used by the Network Operations Centre.
  • Participate in major incident troubleshooting and escalation processes.

 

 



Desired Qualifications, Experience & Skills

  • Degree level education or equivalent experience.  
  • CCIE or CCNP in Routing and Switching with 6 to 7 years of progressive experience in an enterprise environment.
  • Extensive experience in switching and routing on Cisco Nexus, Cat9k, 3850 switches and ASR and ISR4k routers using BGP and OSPF and in implementing redundancy and high availability at different layers.
  • Good understanding of network monitoring tools in particular SolarWinds, NetFlow and ThousandEyes.
  • Good understanding of WLAN technologies. Aerohive experience would be advantageous.
  • Experience of network automation and scripting.
  • Good understanding of WAN optimisation and SD-WAN technologies. Riverbed Steelhead and SteelConnect experience would be advantageous.
  • Knowledge of IPv4 addressing and subnetting.
  • Familiarity with QoS functionality and configuration.
  • Networking in data centre, branch office and cloud computing environments.
  • Familiarity of MPLS and internet circuit based WAN services and provisions.
  • Proficiency in HP networking products would be advantageous.
  • Familiarity with ITIL, Service Now or Remedy. 
  • English at a near-native level required. 
  • Good communicator with aptitude for dealing with people. 
  • Work well in a busy team, being quick to learn and able to deal with a wide range of issues as well as share information.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Excellent troubleshooting skills.
