Nuclear & Power - Electrical and EC&I Graduate Scheme (2019)

What you’ll be doing
We have opportunities for graduates across a range of our Nuclear & Power teams in the UK. From an Electrical/Electronic or Electrical, Control & Instrumentation Engineering background, you could be working in one of the following teams, here’s a little about what they do;

Bristol – Our Electrical, Control and Instrumentation team in Bristol supports a variety of nuclear clients; ensuring the safety of critical control systems, and developing systems for new-build nuclear facilities We are looking for candidates with an electrical or electronic engineering focused degree. You could be involved with the design of systems to support a new generation of nuclear power stations, developing solutions to ensure the ongoing operation of the current nuclear fleet or decommissioning legacy sites and facilities. Numerous opportunities are available to support our clients remotely as well as being able to deliver work from their offices and, potentially, power stations. We are looking for candidates with an electrical or electronic engineering focused degree who have a keen interest in the nuclear energy sector.

Birmingham – Based in our Birmingham office as a power engineer, you will find yourself working on projects in the Nuclear, Offshore Wind, and Grid & Electrical Networks. Some of our current projects include electrical design and verification of the offshore windfarms, grid connection studies for embedded generation projects and conventional generation plants. Design and failure investigation of industrial installations, protection settings and design of new battery storage schemes. We’re looking for candidates who have a keen interest in supporting power system projects and occasional work at client sites across the Energy sector.

Leeds – Our electrical engineering team in Leeds specialises in all aspects of energy networks, from generators through to transmission & distribution and consumer. We carry out High Voltage substation, HV plant and protection & control design and consultancy services, as well as Operational & Management support and oversight and approval of construction and design undertaken by EPC’s. Our key clients are National Grid, EDF Energy, RWE and many other internationally recognised organisations.

Sheffield - Based in our brand-new city centre office; the Sheffield team is set up primarily for advanced mechanical design projects, with a speciality for mechanical handling and heavy moving structures, but we are seeking to expand and diversify our work force and would love to find someone who has an interest in both mechanical and electrical engineering, ideally with a degree covering both.  The office has a particularly diverse work stream, across many sectors such as Nuclear Decommissioning, Nuclear New Build, Defence, Transportation, Water, Offshore and more. The office currently has engineers working on high profile projects such ITER nuclear fusion reactor, Triton Knoll Offshore Windfarm, various Lifting Bridges, amongst many other fascinating projects, big and small. Day-to-day a candidate could expect to develop design and substantiation calculations, write technical reports, identify customer requirements and produce specification & work closely with colleagues in home office and across wider Atkins to deliver work effectively. We're ideally looking for someone with an integrated mechanical and electrical engineering degree or an electrical engineering degree with a strong interest in mechanical.

Glasgow - Based in our Glasgow or Bellshill office you will have an electrical and/or electronics engineering related degree. Within the team, you will find yourself working primarily on projects in the generation, nuclear fuel route and gas storage sectors . Some of our current projects include, design, specification, integration and substantiation of Electrical equipment, controls and instrumentation as well as plant testing and commissioning. The role could therefore include substantial time spent on client sites. We’re looking for bright, enthusiastic and diligent engineers, looking for a technical challenge.

Warrington - Our EC&I team based in Warrington are ideally positioned in the North West to support a variety of clients, both nuclear and non-nuclear. Our staff currently provide support to Urenco UK, Sellafield Ltd, EdF Energy, Rolls Royce and various other energy sector organisations. In supporting these clients, you will gain valuable experience in many areas of EC&I engineering including nuclear new build, decommissioning and continued operational support. Based here you could find yourself working on projects for these clients, and not just from our offices; you will have the opportunity to work at their client offices, sites and stations. You will gain experience for delivering everything from feasibility studies, all the design cycles from functional to detail design, eventually leading to on-site installation. In addition to working with the EC&I team you will gain experience in working alongside our other disciplines including mechanical, process, civil, and safety case engineers in addition to our project management community.

Whitehaven - Based in our Westlakes office on the edge of the stunning Lake District, our team supports clients within the Nuclear industry to deliver innovative solutions in a challenging environment. You will be part of our fast-evolving EC&I team who strive towards using cutting edge technology in a diverse range of projects. Recent projects have incorporated the design, specification, integration and substantiation of all three aspects of EC&I engineering. The ideal candidate will have a keen interest in the nuclear sector and is passionate about incorporating digital design into their work

In addition to some of the responsibilities you can see above for specific locations - As a graduate engineer, you could also be involved in;

• Supporting on some major projects across various areas of Energy from nuclear decommissioning, new power generation and transmission, to nuclear new build projects.
• Carrying out design and assessment for electrical generation, transmission and distribution systems.
• Working in partnership with our clients to provide professional consultancy advice, helping them deliver their complex engineering programmes.
• Reviewing and developing designs to improve plants, equipment, grids and Energy related systems
• Carrying out surveys and site inspections, building strong client relationships
• Using a variety of engineering software packages, as well as 2D and 3D modelling for new designs and modifications
• Attending graduate networks & forums to help shape our scheme & graduate community activities

Who we’re looking for
• You’ll be a talented graduate with a minimum 2.2 Masters/MEng degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Electrical Control and Instrumentation Engineering or any other Electrical related degree.
• You’ll have ambition, vision, enthusiasm and the drive to keep on developing your technical skills and achieve Chartered status.
• You’ll have a passion for working in a consultancy environment, you’ll want to work with customers both internally and externally and you’ll be adaptable and happy to cope with change
• Communication and team-working will be your key skills as well as having the ability to apply your technical knowledge to analyse problems and create innovative solutions.
• You will have a flexible approach to mobility
