We’re now looking to the future, working with Small Modular Reactor (SMR) developers to advance new designs and developing digital applications, such as virtual and augmented reality, for the nuclear industry.


What you’ll be doing
We have opportunities for graduates across a range of our Nuclear & Power teams in the UK. From a Mechanical Engineering related background, you could be working in one of the following teams, here’s a little about what they do;

Bristol – Based here you’ll find yourself working on projects across the Nuclear, Defence, Nuclear Fusion, Oil & Gas, Renewables (mainly offshore wind) and other Atkins Energy markets when required. Some of our key projects include: Hinkley Point C; Wylfa Newydd; ITER; The Technical Support Alliance for EDF Energy Nuclear Generation; Magnox decommissioning and the Triton Knoll Offshore Wind Farm. We are looking for candidates from a variety of degree backgrounds including: Mechanical Engineering and Materials Engineering to those with a Thermofluids, Building Services, Structural Integrity or Offshore Design specialism. You could work across one of the following teams:

Plant Systems and Safety: Supporting changes to the design and operation of nuclear power plant mechanical systems. Joining this team, you could be supporting clients with safety case development, hazard studies, engineering design and substantiation, remote operation development, and new build design assessments. We also consider candidates with Chemical Engineering, Physics or other heavily mechanical focused degrees.

Design and Analysis
This group specialises on stress / structural analysis, complex mechanical / offshore design as well as materials and corrosion. Joining this team, you could be involved in supporting clients at various stages of the lifetime of a structure from initial design and detailed design to asset management and lifetime substantiation (including life extension / re-substantiation). We also consider candidates who have studied Materials Engineering/Metallurgy, Chemical Engineering or Nuclear Engineering.

Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning: The HVAC team is part of the Systems & Environment group and concentrates on the systems that manage environmental hazards within buildings and structures. Joining this specialist team, you could be involved with analysis of hazards and the design of mechanical services across a wide variety of projects.

Derby – As a trusted advisor to the UK nuclear market, we can’t always shout about the work we’re involved with, but you can expect to play your part in major projects, such as the design of nuclear fuel handling equipment, stress analysis on safety critical pressure vessels and supporting manufacture of nuclear plant components to name but a few. With capability in mechanical design and analysis, nuclear substantiation, nuclear safety case work and manufacturing consultancy, we provide technical expertise to major nuclear companies, the defence sector, and across the wider energy market, helping them to deliver innovative and successful projects. Sheffield – Based in our brand-new city centre office; the Sheffield team is set up primarily for advanced mechanical design projects, with a speciality for mechanical handling and heavy moving structures. The office has a particularly diverse work stream, across many sectors such as Nuclear Decommissioning, Nuclear New Build, Defence, Transportation, Water, Offshore and more. The office currently has engineers working on high profile projects such ITER nuclear fusion reactor, Triton Knoll Offshore Windfarm, various Lifting Bridge amongst many other fascinating projects, big and small. Day-to-day a candidate could expect to develop design and substantiation calculations, write technical reports, identify customer requirements and produce specification & work closely with colleagues in home office and across wider Atkins to deliver work effectively. We are also interested in candidates who have studied a joint/integrated mechanical and electrical engineering degree or electrical engineering degree with a strong mechanical interest.

Epsom - Based in our Epsom office you will find yourself in the Plant & Systems Engineering team. Working across our entire Nuclear Market (including new build, generation and decommissioning) our clients include EDF Energy, Horizon, Hitachi-GE and Magnox. We are looking for candidates who have a keen interest in mechanical equipment design and procurement, piping systems and project engineering. In addition, we have site teams based at both Sizewell B and Dungeness B with opportunities for secondments to these locations.

Glasgow- Based in our Glasgow or Bellshill office you’ll find yourself working primarily on projects in the Gas Storage, Decentralised Energy and Power Generation markets. Our portfolio of projects encompasses asset integrity, design and assurance for a variety of blue chip clients across a broad spectrum of facilities ranging from district heating, biomass, gas and CHP networks to large scale generation plant and decentralised energy assets. We’re looking for candidates who have a keen interest in, performing structural & mechanical design and analysis, pressure and pipework systems, or rotating equipment working across all of the various energy sectors. We are looking for candidates with a Mechanical Engineering (or heavily mechanical focused) degree or an integrated Mechanical and Electrical Engineering degree.

Warrington – Based here you could find yourself supporting a number of key nuclear clients within the energy and defence sectors, such as EDF Energy, Magnox, ITER, Sellafield, Urenco and a number of MOD sites. We also deliver work elsewhere in the Energy industry, making use of our strong design and analytical skills and plant knowledge on projects for other clients. Whether we’re delivering high quality engineering and technical services or programme management, we always deliver the solution that’s right for our clients. As an engineer within our team, your work will be diverse and challenging and you could be involved in; producing calculations, authorising and updating technical documents, supporting bidding activity and supporting our QA process. During your early career you will develop a strong foundation in Mechanical Engineering principles and their application to varied projects/domains and will gain a track record of delivering technical solutions in challenging timescales, which will help you gain experience and competency towards your Chartership application.

Whitehaven – Based in our Whitehaven office on the edge of the stunning Lake District World Heritage Site, you’ll be part of a forward thinking, highly innovative Mechanical team working at the cutting edge of digital design and pushing the standard norms of how engineering projects are delivered in the 21st Century. Working on some of the most complex and challenging decommissioning projects within the Nuclear industry from initial concept through to detailed design and delivery, you will find the work diverse, immersive and ultimately very rewarding. The ideal candidate will have an interest in static and dynamic mechanical loading and have a real passion for 3D digital innovation and 3D modelling with a vision for how this can shape the future of engineering.

In addition to some of the responsibilities you can see above for specific locations - As a graduate engineer, you could also be involved in;
• Supporting on some major projects across various areas of Energy from nuclear decommissioning, new power generation and nuclear new build.
• Working in partnership with our clients to provide professional consultancy advice, helping them deliver their complex engineering programmes
• Reviewing and developing designs to improve plants, equipment, structures and Energy related systems
• Carrying out surveys and site inspections, building strong client relationships
• Using a variety of engineering software packages, as well as 2D and 3D modelling for new designs and modifications
• Carrying out design and assessment for new build projects as well as additions, modifications and repairs to existing assets.
• Attending graduate networks & forums to help shape our scheme & graduate community activities

Who we’re looking for
• You’ll be a talented graduate with a minimum 2.2 Masters/MEng degree in a relevant Mechanical Engineering degree discipline
• You’ll have ambition, vision, enthusiasm and the drive to keep on developing your technical skills and achieve Chartered status
• You’ll have a passion for working in a consultancy environment, you’ll want to work with customers both internally and externally and you’ll be adaptable and happy to cope with change
• Communication and team-working will be your key skills as well as having the ability to apply your technical knowledge to analyse problems and create innovative solutions
• You will have a flexible approach to mobility
