Atkins Nuclear Solutions US is currently seeking a Nuclear Safety Engineer to join the nuclear team in Aiken, SC.

Job Description


Additional duties will include development and review of Technical Safety Requirements (TSRs), Documented Safety Analyses (DSAs) and other nuclear safety basis documents.

Ensure that the developed products are consistent with existing TSRs (as applicable) and are compliant with standard DOE rules and guides and site specific methodology manuals. Demonstrate personal accountability for project schedules, deadlines, budgets, and the safe performance of work.

Ensure that the developed nuclear safety documentation complies with requirements and as necessary, applicable controls are implemented in field procedures.

The Nuclear Safety Engineer shall support the Nuclear & Criticality Safety Engineering organization by providing TSR expertise to company facilities



Job Requirements

Must be able to interface with government program representatives on high-level technical and project issues.

Ability to successfully make quick decisions and meet goals while working under severe time constraints

Demonstrated ability to be creative with a keen attention to detail

Possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills

Possess planning, organizational, and analytical skills

Possess the technical knowledge to work with multiple functional areas and offices in order to provide comprehensive recommendations

Ability to multi-task between changing requirements and priorities

Requires a motivated self-starter who pays attention to details to support assignments while functioning in a time-sensitive, fluid environment

Position may on occasion require unscheduled or extended work hours during this specific task

Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Math or Science

Must have education in quantity surveying/estimating, architectural technology or engineering technology.

15 years of experience in the nuclear safety industry supporting the Department of Energy (DOE) or the commercial nuclear industry.

Must have previous experience developing and writing TSRs.

Must have previous experience developing and writing Chapter 5 development for DSAs.

Previous experience with implementation of DOE G 423.1-1, Implementation Guide for Use in Developing Technical Safety Requirements.

Previous experience with implementation of DOE-STD-3009, Preparation Guide for U.S. Department of Energy Nonreactor Nuclear Facility Documented Safety Analyses

Preferred Experience


A DOE security clearance is not initially required; however, the candidate must have the ability to obtain and maintain a DOE “L” or “Q” security clearance if needed to perform assigned duties.
Previous SRS nuclear safety engineering experience is preferred.




Due to current law, and in conjunction with the advertised position’s scope of work, candidates that are Non-US citizens are required to be submitted for further approval to the NNSA before being considered for hiring purposes. In addition, any candidates with dual citizenship in the US and another country must undergo further review for approval by the NNSA. Proof of citizenship will be requested upon receipt of application/resume.
