OLE Practice Manager

Reporting to the Railway Systems Practice Director and responsible for the on time technical delivery of all Overhead Line Equipment (OLE) schemes within the Atkins Transportation portfolio the individual will manage an experienced team of engineers involved in the delivery of electrification design packages across a variety of projects in the UK and overseas.

The Practice Manager is responsible for leading multiple OLE Design Teams at a national level with support from senior engineers in the team to deliver all aspects of OLE design schemes, in accordance with all company standards and best practice, and to manage and control all staff appointed to projects and work packages being produced under your control.

The Atkins rail electrification team undertakes all aspects of electrical power distribution & traction design in the rail environment including survey, design drawings and calculations, technical specifications and reports. The team supports work across the business including major projects, re-signalling schemes and electrification programmes.

Responsibilities

Deliver effective technical management:

• be accountable for the overall technical quality of work in his/her business unit;
• ensures that the business deploys the appropriate people, processes and tools to deliver the current workload in a controlled manner and puts controls in place commensurate with the Atkins Design Principles and the Atkins Technical Assurance Goals to ensure the excellence of the delivered product;
• agree the allocation of key technical roles to each project (Project Technical Leader, Checker and Project Technical Reviewer), balancing the need to develop leads with controlling risk;
• prevent the release (delivery) of substandard work while maintaining budget and programme in a controlled manner.

Deliver effective resource ownership:

• work with the Professional Heads of Discipline to ensure technical capability is being maintained or developed to meet their business strategy;
• Line Management- PDR's, time approvals, recruitment
• support the business development team in identification of technical support to business development activities.
• place work packages with other business units and liaise with the Senior Business Leader in those business units to ensure seamless technical assurance is maintained.

Deliver effective business leadership:

• Strategic planning maintaining resource profiles, targeting and winning work
• protecting the reputation of our business by ensuring we deliver technical excellence to our clients and generate a profitable return for Atkins
• approving only bids for projects within our capability, ensuring that the team allocated to each project is suitable and that technical quality and assurance arrangements are appropriate for the level of technical risk associated with that project.
• Developing and maintaining internal and external client relationships


Experience and Skills

• Experience of managing and leading teams.
• Demonstrate accountability for the delivery of projects to cost and programme targets.
• Understanding of design procedures, change control, checking and review requirements
• Experience of motivating teams to prioritise and deliver tasks to time and budget
• Experience of project delivery for the rail industry and electrification projects in particular.
• Experience at managing interface issues with other rail engineering disciplines on multi-discipline engineering projects
• Experience at managing interface issues with remote design teams both in the UK and overseas.
• Good understanding of Network Rail Standards, Group Standards, British / European Standards and Railway Safety Principles
• Ideally holding a Degree and be qualified to Chartered Engineer status (or working towards) with relevant and appropriate experience of OLE engineering design /consultancy.

• Demonstrate the ability to identify and input to activities in support of the wider business objectives that may draw upon skills in addition to those outlined above
• Able to think logically and laterally, solving problems creatively and assessing them rationally
• Able to multitask and respond to short-notice changes

This role may require security clearance and offers of employment will be dependent on obtaining the relevant level of clearance. If this is necessary it will be discussed with you at interview.
