Atkins’ Transportation is our centre of excellence for the design of highway infrastructure projects. We are currently working on a number of professional services consultancy frameworks, including the Collaborative Delivery Framework (CDF) for Highways England, soon to be replaced by the Routes to Market framework. We pride ourselves on constantly striving to improve the way we do things, even if this means challenging “business as usual”. We are seeking a competent Performance and Continuous Improvement Manager who will support and work closely with our project teams to drive performance. Our business uses Lean principles to help maintain client focus, eliminate waste and drive continuous improvement. The successful applicant will help deliver our Lean Deployment Strategy, assisting in the development and implementation of improvement initiatives across Transportation projects and strategically across the wider business.

The successful applicant will also ensure our project teams fulfil the requirements of CPF reporting, and will use the metrics to drive performance by identifying strengths and weaknesses. They will be proactive in implementing improvements in delivery. On CDF and the forthcoming Routes to Market frameworks supplier CPF scores directly link to the share of incentivisation gained upon completion of the project, consequently Atkins is seeking a high calibre applicant who will support teams working on these Major Projects in order to optimise our performance.

Essential Criteria

• An appetite for delivering continuous improvement.
• Knowledge and experience of performance monitoring and in working with project teams to drive performance improvement.
• Experience in the analysis and evaluation of both quantitative and qualitative data.
• Strong written skills as well as verbal skills, and the ability to present information in a clear and professional manner.
• Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Excel and Word.
• The ability to work under pressure to challenging deadlines and commitment to meeting client requirements.
• Experience of driving timely delivery from others.

Desirable Criteria (but not essential)
• Experience of working in a design engineering environment.
• Experience of performance monitoring/ management on Highways England major projects and preferably some familiarity with Highways England performance monitoring toolkits e.g. Collaborative Performance Framework (CPF)
• Experience of engaging with Highways England Supplier Performance team beneficial, however not essential.
• An understanding and working knowledge of Lean principles and techniques.

• Engages with project teams to guide them on gathering and presenting the necessary data/ evidence to complete the CPF toolkit and to meet the submission deadlines stipulated by the Highways England Supplier Performance team.
• Evaluates data/ evidence provided by the teams in order to ensure it is robust and meets the requirements of the toolkit metrics. Challenges input where appropriate.
• Works with project teams and Highways England, where appropriate, to tackle blockers to information gathering.
• Engages with project managers and teams to tackle weak areas, and shares best practice where performance is strong.
• Engages with HE Supplier Performance where appropriate to assist with the development and refinement of metrics.
• Proactively supports the Transportation Continuous Improvement Leader in delivering our Lean Deployment Strategy, including development of the Lean in Transportation SharePoint site.
• Analyses trends and uses ease/benefit assessments to target improvement activity.
• Develops, implements and provides specialist support for improvement initiatives across both project and business functions.
• Assists in monitoring and reporting improvement activity across the business, including the use of Lean visual management techniques.

• Can do the above in a collaborative manner with Highways England and our delivery partners, therefore embodying the ethos of the Collaborative Delivery Framework (CDF).
• Can deliver accurate and robust reports orally and written, in an objective and persuasive manner.
• Is used to delivering in a time pressured environment to meet client deadlines, and driving timely delivery from others.
• Is able to command respect and communicate the importance of performance monitoring and improvement to the wider team.
• Can demonstrate initiative and resilience.

This role may require security clearance and offers of employment will be dependent on obtaining the relevant level of clearance. If this is necessary it will be discussed with you at interview.
