SNC-Lavalin Atkins business seeks an energetic and highly motivated self-starter to join our Raleigh, NC Transportation NEPA Group as a Planning Intern.


MAJOR FUNCTION/ROLE
  • The ideal candidate for this internship will apply their NEPA and state and federal regulatory knowledge towards the assessment of transportation projects, along with preparation of or assistance with the preparation of environmental documents (Categorical Exclusions, Environmental Assessments/FONSIs and Environmental Impact Statements).
  • Under supervision, performs a variety of basic technical tasks to assist project managers, technicians, engineers, architects, planners, surveyors or scientists working in transportation, development, environmental, land surveying or other technical services of the company.

JOB DUTIES

  • Performs basic technical support assignments.
  • Evaluation of impacts from transportation and planning projects on the built, cultural and natural environment.
  • Coordination with design professionals and overall project team to identify opportunities for
  • avoiding and minimizing potential impacts.
  • Perform field investigations of projects including land use and community resources.
  • Gather and analyze data related to indirect and cumulative impacts, environmental justice and community impacts. Assisting with public involvement and outreach activities.
  • Preparing North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) NEPA documentation for transportation projects. Occasional travel associated with field investigations, client meetings and training.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • High school plus two years of specialized training such as is obtained in vocational or technical school, or completion of an Associate's degree program in a related technical field, or completion of the first two years in a four-year college or university technical program. No experience is required with a related Associate's degree or its equivalent; two years of related experience is required without such formal training.

SPECIAL SKILLS
  • Technical writing skills desired. Math skills to perform simple calculations; willingness to learn.
  • Basic computer skills required to enter data into spreadsheets or databases.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Aptitude for maintaining a professional attitude and attention to detail while working alone and within a team environment.
  • Excellent technical writing and verbal communication skills with clients and colleague.
  • Strong organizational, task and time management, deductive reasoning, and analytical skills; Proficiency with the MS Office suite of software.
