Practice Manager- Intelligent Mobility and Smart Technologies

Intelligent Mobility is a top priority area for the company’s growth strategy. When you join our Intelligent Mobility and Smart Technology team you’ll become a key player in transforming the future of transport. We are a growing practice of around 80 engineers, consultants and technical specialists. We work with emerging technologies to push the boundaries and drive innovation. Our projects range from smart cities and driverless cars to data exploitation, journey management, roads of the future and urban / inter-urban traffic management. Our investment in improving transport technologies will change how we will make journeys in the future, and we are playing lead roles in shaping the industry through projects such as high-speed rail, intelligent transport systems and driverless car projects.

Our team need to look at challenges very differently to connect people and place and this requires a huge variety of skills and capabilities, including specialists in connected and autonomous technologies, cyber security, human factors, mobility as a service, big data and more. Providing simple solutions to complex problems, it’s an exciting journey and you can play a lead role.

• Enthuse our people through effective performance and development plans that align to their career opportunities
• Liaise with the Practice Director to ensure we have sufficient resources with the right skills to deliver our current and future market strategies.
• Support the technical development of staff within their practice team
• Work with the market and business development teams to engage with clients and actively sell our technical capabilities


• Co-ordinating the Team to deliver business performance with focus on meeting or exceeding productivity targets while supporting wider Practice and Atkins objectives;
• Co-ordination with Practice director, team leaders, technical leads, project managers, market leads and other Atkins staff (and associates/sub-contractors) to establish resource demand based on pipeline of opportunities and ensure appropriate resource allocation;
• Co-ordinate, maintain and manage the Transportation Resource Management System (and other relevant pipeline and project management systems such as CRM and EA) on a regular basis;
• Co-ordination with Practice director, team leaders, technical leads for review of business and tender opportunities on a regular basis.
• Lead the recruitment of staff in line with the business requirements and future opportunities;
• Leading and contributing to tenders and/or business development opportunities, in-line with corporate governance and then, when secured, ensuring the work is delivered in the most efficient and effective way by supporting the teams in resource allocation, client liaison and so forth;
• Co-ordination of development of staff, identification of staff training and competence review in line with the requirements of their respective disciplines;
• Line management of direct report Staff;
• Maintaining agreed personal productivity level and take on project management / project director roles as required.


• A degree (or equivalent) is essential;
• Chartered status or equivalent;
• Experience of leading/managing teams;
• Experienced people manager with good interpersonal and conflict resolution skills;
• Excellent communication skills to interface with clients and internal stakeholders;
• Demonstrable collaborative behaviours to interface with the Practice Director, Team Leaders, and other parts of Atkins;
• Experience in understanding customer requirements and developing winning bids.

• Be available to travel across the UK if required
• Strong business acumen with a demonstrated knowledge of identifying potential value creation
• Excellent team player
• Degree level or equivalent professional qualification in relevant discipline

The candidate would be based in our London office but there will be an occasional requirement to travel when required.

This role may require security clearance and offers of employment will be dependent on obtaining the relevant level of clearance. If this is necessary it will be discussed with you at interview.
