With this in mind, we are looking to recruit a Practice Manager to lead the Rail Vehicle Consultancy Group in the development and delivery of the rail vehicle consultancy business. The candidate would be based primarily in our Derby Office but there will be a requirement to travel within the UK and abroad.
 
The candidate would be responsible for leading the following groups:
 
  • Rail Vehicle/Plant Approvals associated assurance services; including NoBo, DeBo, AsBo, PAB and ICP.
  • Specialist Rail Vehicle consultancy including, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Services.
  • Strategic Consultancy – including supporting TOCs with franchise bids, new rail vehicle suppliers (to UK and abroad)
  • Further development and growth of the Rail Vehicle Consultancy Team based around the teams existing areas of expertise.
 
As Practice Manager the successful candidate would be required to ensure that the teams currently comprising of circa 20 people + a wide associate network, have a cohesive strategy for offering Rail Vehicle Consultancy and assurance services, particular in heavy rail in the UK – but also light rail and metro systems and overseas railway administrations. 
 
Whilst ensuring the group has a strategy and therefore a recognisable identity, it must also compliment and work with the wider Consultancy teams and furthermore, the wider Atkins Transportation Organisation.
 
The Practice Manager will also work with the Market teams to increase visibility in the Rail Vehicle Consultancy Market and increase the breadth of clients that we work with.
 
As Practice Manager, the successful candidate will ensure that corporate governance is followed and whilst this role may, occasionally mean acting as Project Manager the main the role will be that of Project Director or senior reviewer (above the PD role).


The Individual
 
  • Able to lead the technical work so that Atkins has a reputation for technical excellence and quality of delivery
  • Proven capability of managing a business, with particular emphasis on identifying opportunities and turning these into tangible work streams and business growth.
  • Measurable experience in a number of the following fields: rail vehicle projects, interface management; requirements engineering; safety assurance; risk assessment; and validation and verification
  • A hard working and flexible individual, who is reliable, proactive and innovative, whilst able to keep calm under pressure and when working to often demanding deadlines
  • A high expectation of performance for themselves and other members of the team, coupled with a drive for continuous improvement
  • Customer focused
  • Excellent interpersonal, organisational and communication skills both verbally and in writing
  • A supportive and encouraging approach to mentoring less experienced members of the team, combined with a passion for staff development
  • Able to adapt to different cultures and working environments to build rapport with both clients and the practice teams
  • Be available to travel across the UK, and internationally, as required
    Strong business acumen with a demonstrated knowledge of identifying potential value creation
  • Excellent team player
  • Degree level or equivalent professional qualification in relevant discipline
  • Chartered Engineer or working towards Chartership
 
Responsibilities
 
  • Responsibility for ensuring bids are produced correctly, in-line with corporate governance and then, when secured, the work is delivered in the most efficient and effective way by supporting the teams in resource allocation, client liaison and so forth.
  • Project management liaison with client teams, and colleagues across the Atkins group.
  • Contribute to the Consultancy Senior management team, to guide the business and inform strategy etc.
  • Leadership in the discipline of rail vehicles in our rail industry commissions, and developing Atkins approaches in this regard to be of value to clients and best in class.
  • Promotion of Atkins Rail Vehicles capabilities throughout the rail industry and with key clients
  • Drive innovation in service offerings.
  • Support business development with technical expertise.
  • Spot opportunities and foster client relationships in the Rail Vehicles Engineering space.

Support the Practice Director, Transport Infrastructure Advisory Services, in wider initiatives across the Practice.
