Principal Consultant – Streets and Public Realm Design

We’re seeking an ambitious chartered engineer to lead our design capability in London and the South East linking in with resourcing needs across our Practice at a national level. Ideally you would be based in Croydon although we are able to offer a London and Epsom office based position for the right candidate.

We’re a successful team with a well-balanced blend of skills to face our client needs, and are looking for an enthusiastic individual to add further value to our offer to the marketplace. You will have a demonstrable track record and solid technical capability in the Highway Design, Traffic Engineering and Public Realm field, with experience in managing project delivery; this exciting opportunity will provide you with a platform to further develop our business in London and the South East.

Your key responsibilities in this role will include the following:

• Being a ‘focal point’ and Senior Lead for highway design and engineering matters in our consultancy business in London and the South East
• Managing a range of design projects from small to large scale public realm, traffic engineering and infrastructure projects
• Working proactively and supporting project directors and managers in the delivery of large scale public realm investigations and scheme design, including the preparation of drawings, scheme costs and reports
• Fulfilling the role of project manager and possibly project director on your own projects.
• Evaluating engineering problems and providing workable solutions which address issues during design and implementation on major projects
• Leading / managing the preparation of scheme drawings from feasibility design through to detailed design
• Ensuring that projects are completed to client specifications, budgets and programme
• Working with planners, traffic modellers, architects, landscape architects, masterplanners and clients as required on technical aspects of projects
• Provide technical design guidance and acting as mentor to more junior members of staff (as well as the opportunity to be involved in future recruitment if this is of interest).

Atkins’ Transportation Consultancy Practice comprises circa 900 staff delivering planning, technical and advisory consultancy services to a wide-ranging client base in the UK and overseas. We are part of a larger Transportation business of circa 3,750 talented professionals covering highway, rail and local transport sectors in the UK.

Within the Consultancy Practice is the Transport Planning sub-Practice of circa 300 staff, delivering a wide range of projects for public and private sector clients. In 2018 we are growing our Transport Planning sub-Practice and are looking to recruit talented individuals responsible for the delivery of transport planning projects to help us deliver and win work. Transport planning currently includes around 30 members of staff who focus on the highway design of transport and infrastructure projects in urban centres.

The successful candidate will have a background in highway engineering and transport planning with experience in working across a range of projects for multiple clients. The design team in Transport Planning has a wide-ranging capability, from site feasibility and masterplanning, through to planning, assessment and then detailed design and implementation. The multi-disciplinary nature of the business also means that we are able to work as part of an in-house project team to offer clients a true ‘one stop shop’ for the planning, design and delivery of development-led and infrastructure projects.

The team has a strong pipeline and solid presence within the marketplace, Our Practice is involved in a number of high profile design projects with a variety of clients both in the UK and overseas and our current portfolio of works comprises a diverse mix of local, national and international development and public realm projects. We also provide specialist input to a range of strategic rail, highways, aviation and other infrastructure projects drawn from across the business. Key clients include Highways England, Network Rail, Hampshire County Council, Surrey County Council, LB Harrow, London City Airport, Heathrow Airport and The Crown Estate. Some of our key projects include the Canary Wharf to Rotherhithe crossing, the Croydon Area Remodelling Scheme, HS2 and the third runway expansion at Heathrow Airport.

We have a growth plan to respond to this pipeline, and are expanding the physical presence of our Transport Planning Practice in the region; we have a long-term home in Epsom and London however have also now established presence in other Atkins’ office locations in the South East, notably Aldershot and Croydon. It’s an exciting time to join, and we welcome ambitious candidates to support in realising this growth plan.


• A Degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent
• Chartered Engineer status

Essential Criteria
• Project and people management skills with a hands-on attitude to technical project work
• Appropriate previous experience of working in this field (development and implementation of urban highway, transport and public realm schemes, including cycle schemes, bus priority projects, high street improvements and signalised junctions and the highways elements of rail and aviation projects)
• Working knowledge of CDM and relevant Health and Safety regulations
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to build and maintain client relationships and manage stakeholders
• Delivery of work in line with DMRB and MfS guidance.

Desirable Criteria
• Experience of 3D design using AutoCAD Civils 3D is desirable
• Experience with Projectwise
• Working knowledge of construction contracts.

You will work with an established team of professionals to grow the breadth and volume of this technical service offering to clients. The ideal candidate needs to be a driven individual with strong technical acumen, commercial awareness and experience in project and programme management.
