The Role

This post offers a challenging and rewarding opportunity to have a leading role both in the development of new power generation and transmission plant and management of existing assets, supporting a growing portfolio of new and well established clients.

As part of our team you will be providing specialist technical support and leadership to the delivery of projects. Key responsibilities will include engineering design concept development, technical specification of plant and equipment, supervision of detailed design for new build power generation and transmission plant and retrofits / modifications to existing facilities, integration of plant and systems as well as providing life management strategies for all high voltage electrical equipment for existing assets

This role will also include evaluation of OEM proposals, technical questions, project design documentation and drawings, review and approval of safety documentation and management of safe systems of work.

Developing relationships is a key part of this role as you’ll be liaising with clients and managing project teams. You’ll also be supporting preparation of tenders and proposals.

Developing people will be a key part of your role and you will want to supervise and develop junior team members. You will take on line management to support staff in their career progression and help drive our overall organisational performance and capability development.

The Person

You’ll be a recognised expert in power generation / transmission or related industries and demonstrable experience of power generation technologies with high voltage electrical static plant. A detailed knowledge of either switchgear (greater than 3.3kV), Power Transformers, Cables or Protection Systems will be required. A broad knowledge in managing the technical operation of static high voltage electrical equipment in a generation environment is essential. Experience with technical design and operational criteria for connection of generation equipment to electricity transmission systems (UK grid code compliance) would be advantageous.

You’ll also have excellent stakeholder management skills and numeracy, written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present arguments both verbally and written.

You’ll enjoy using a flexible approach to managing the demands of a portfolio of projects and applying skills in new areas. You’ll also be able to quickly understand a wide range of industrial plant processes through review of technical drawings and documentation, and to be able to communicate this to a variety of levels within a client organisation.

In addition to an excellent understanding of high voltage electrical systems and static plant operating in a power generation environment, it would be advantageous to have knowledge of excitation systems, voltage regulation systems, synchroniser systems, electronic governors

Other key requirements we’re looking for include:
  • Honours/Master’s degree Electrical Engineering or equivalent qualifications & experience
  • Chartered member of the IET
  • Understanding of the engineering project and asset lifecycles – applicable both to small plant upgrade/modification and the implementation of a major new plant installation
  • Project engineering experience and track record of OEM and interface management
  • Substantial on-site plant experience and knowledge of safe systems of work
