If you are a Principal/Senior HV Electrical Engineer ideally with National Grid TP141 authorisation (Plant Design), then we are keen to talk to you about joining our team. This opportunity is to strengthen our activities in transmission and distribution substation design, such as supporting National Grid’s FEED framework, on which we are an active player. In particular, we are looking for an experienced HV electrical engineer to strengthen our substation design team with the appetite to liaise directly with clients and drive forward this area of the business. You are strong both technically and commercially, and can use your leadership skills to drive growth in our business and our people. Location -wise, you will ideally be based with either our Epsom, Birmingham or Leeds teams but we’d want you to be flexible and able to work across our offices.

The Role

As part of our team you’ll be providing a range of services from feasibility design through to the preparation of technical specifications, production of construction drawings and design compliance audit throughout the design process on all elements of HV primary plant and substation configuration. 

In your role, you’ll want to provide Project Management, Lead Design Engineering and TP141 Principal Designer Representation for Front End Engineering Design (FEED) services for National Grid’s High Voltage Substation projects.

Key responsibilities could include:

• Day-to-day management and coordination of design teams including HV Substation, Protection & Control, HV Cable, Civil Engineers and CAD Technicians
• Coordination of inputs being provided by other departments such as survey/geotechnical, transport and environmental
• Financial project control and reporting
• Controlling agreed project schedules
• Ensuring the design meets all the client’s requirements
• Conducting engineering reviews and approvals of design drawings, reports, construction programmes and other deliverables; quality assurance
• Attending and Chairing Design Reviews, Hazard Reviews, Option Selection and other related meetings
• In accordance with CDM 2015 Construction (Design and Management) and UKBP/TP137 as TP141 Principal Designer Rep (Pre-Contract), you’ll plan, manage and monitor the pre-construction phase including any survey works and co-ordinate matters relating to Health and Safety from appointment through to main works contact award
• Acting as main point of contact for FEED framework projects with National Grid for Select Option and Development phases.

Building and developing relationships is a key part of this role, as is delivering National Grid TP141 authorisation (Plant Design).



The Person

You will enjoy working in a team environment and using your expertise to guide other members of staff. You’ll also have the desire and ability to lead bids, deliver and technically manage work either as a lead or part of a team. You will also have strong verbal and written communication skills, and excellent quantitative and problem-solving skills.

In addition to having a positive attitude to health and safety (especially within the design process), you’ll also be able to demonstrate the following:

• Bachelor’s Degree and/ or Masters in Electrical Engineering, but candidates holding HNC/ HND qualifications and proven experience will also be considered;
• Chartered Engineer with membership of IET;
• Proven technical experience in the design and application of HV power system plant up to and including 400kV, including an understanding of other engineering disciplines (civil, protection & control);
• A National Grid Authorisation Record (TP141 authorisation).
