Principal Safety Engineer

Are you an experienced Safety Engineer in the Oil & Gas industry looking for your next career opportunity?  Then this could be the role for you.

The Role

Our Oil & Gas business has been operating for over four decades supplying engineering and specialist services across a wide range of disciplines and applications covering fixed and floating offshore structures, terminals, refineries, petrochemical plants and pipelines.

Our Safety Engineering teams are key to the multi-disciplinary design and assurance services that we provide to our clients and are based at our regional hubs in Asia Pacific, the Middle East, the Americas and in UK and Europe.

We are looking for a Principal Safety Engineer to work within our Safety and RAM team at our Epsom office, playing an integral part in establishing and building close client relationships, delivering engineering solutions, completing site and client office visits and fixed term secondments.

The Person

Candidates should have an excellent understanding of the technical and operational issues fundamental to process and technical safety and risk engineering within the oil and gas industry. In addition, candidates should have a strong interest in business development – being able to interface with clients, understand their needs and convert opportunities into successful workstreams.

As well as building excellent relationships with our clients, you’ll also be able to build excellent relationships within the team, being able to provide comprehensive support to a team within a project, and mentor others, creating an environment where team members are encouraged, challenged and motivated to “be the best they can”.

You will enjoy approaching things in different ways to find the best possible fit – you like making improvements and consider different approaches, trying to find the best approach to fit whatever is the current context.

As well as the above you will demonstrate the following;

• Relevant engineering degree or equivalent;
• Membership as a safety professional with a substantial level of oil and gas safety experience;
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
• Project engineering skills to ensure studies and projects are delivered within agreed budgets and schedules;
• Experience in facilitating HAZID, HAZOPs, LOPAs and other risk assessment workshops;
• A strong understanding of technical safety studies (QRA, FEA, EERA, etc.) for onshore and offshore oil & gas facilities or for other major hazard industries;
• Development of ALARP arguments for process safety risks;
• Authoring of HSE/safety cases for design and operations phases;
• Leadership of project teams and mentoring others in a technical capacity;
• Strong Quality, Safety, Environment (QSE) focus, with demonstrable track record of implementing these standards

Additional Information

• Some work outside normal office hours may be necessary. Travel to and from client sites and/or temporary secondment to client’s offices may also be required.
• This is an exciting time for Atkins; we are diversifying our portfolio to become a more global organisation, whilst also continuing to grow our Energy sector in the UK. There will be opportunities for international travel and applicants with a desire for non-UK based assignments will be welcomed.
• Atkins recognises that there are many well qualified people who are looking to further their career in engineering, but who cannot commit to full time employment. We support flexible working arrangements and are interested to discuss how we can accommodate individual requirements.

Training

Atkins develops individuals through a portfolio of training and development activities designed to help you make the best of your abilities and talents. These are reviewed with individuals through an annual appraisal process. We actively support staff in achieving corporate membership of relevant institutions.

This role may require security clearance and offers of employment will be dependent on obtaining the relevant level of clearance.  If this is necessary it will be discussed with you at interview.
If applying to this role please do not make reference to (in conversation) or include in your application or CV,  details of any current or previously held security clearance.
