The Atkins Civil Engineering Group is seeking a highly motivated, detail oriented, self-starter to join our Orange, CA office as a Senior Civil Engineer IV.

MAJOR FUNCTION/ROLE

The primary role of the Civil Engineer/Senior Design Engineer will be to support and lead the review of improvement plans prepared by others for land development projects in the County of Orange and surrounding municipalities. Secondary duties will include design of projects for public works agencies and/or water and wastewater clients in the greater County of Orange and Los Angeles County areas, and providing construction support services.

JOB DUTIES
  • Review improvement plans (e.g. grading, street, water, sanitary sewer, storm drain, ball field, etc.) prepared by others for land development projects in the County of Orange and surrounding municipalities
  • Reviews hydrology reports, storm drain calculations and erosion control plans prepared by others for land development projects in the County of Orange and surrounding municipalities
  • Performs planning and design activities for in-house public works projects such as street improvements (e.g. residential street rehabilitation, street widening, intersection widening, etc.), storm drain facilities, waterlines, and sanitary sewer lines.
  • Performs hydrology and hydraulics calculations to support the design of in-house public works projects
  • Performs staff augmentation
  • Prepares basis of design and storm drain reports for in-house public works projects
  • Provides construction support services such as reviewing shop drawings for conformance with contract documents; assists in recordkeeping and in generating progress reports; observes construction procedures 
  • Prepares cost and quantity estimates
  • Coordinates work with other engineers and professionals within and outside own discipline and office, and with support services staff.
  • Provides supervision and mentoring to younger technical staff as necessary
  • Uphold engineering ethics and professional standards of conduct.


EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
  • B.S. or M.S. in Civil Engineering. This level may be achieved by Engineers with fifteen years experience since Bachelor's or fourteen years since Master's. Typical incumbent has 15-20 years of experience.
SPECIAL SKILLS
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and strong technical writing and communications skills are required
  • Experience and familiarity with the following is preferred: AutoCAD, Civil 3D, MicroStation, Blue Beam, and various modeling packages as required. 
  • Familiarity and experience with local land development process, requirements, and regulatory permitting agencies is preferred
  • Project management experience (e.g. developing/managing project scopes, schedules and budgets; supervising multidiscipline teams with staff of varying experience; communicating effectively with team members, clients and others involved with the projects; attending meetings with the client and others involved with the projects, etc.) is a plus
  • Business development experience (e.g. identification of opportunities, preparing proposals, making presentations to clients, etc.) is a plus
  • Extensive working knowledge of Standard Specifications for Public Works (APWA Greenbook) is a plus
  • Working knowledge of the County of Orange infrastructure design standards and drainage requirements is a plus

PROFESSIONAL REGISTRATIONS

  • PE license in CA, or ability to obtain within 12 months, is required.
