Safety Engineer

Atkins are looking for a Junior Safety Engineer to join our existing and growing team to provide systems safety engineering. Undertaking systems safety activities in support of UK Safety Cases for platforms, systems and supporting equipment as required.

Support the development of Safety Cases and associated documentation in accordance with Defence policies and Defence Standards, for UK platforms, systems and associated equipment, by:

• Developing and maintaining Project Safety Management Plans (SMP).
• Undertaking Safety assessment of design and influencing design through safety considerations.
• Secretariat Hazard Identification, e.g. SWIFT, HAZOPs.
• Undertaking Hazard and Risk Analyses, e.g.
o Functional Failure Analysis (FFA).
o Failure Mode, Effects and Criticality Analysis (FMECA).
o Operating and Support Hazard Analysis (OSHA).
o Occupational Health Hazard Analysis (OHHA).
o Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) and Event Tree Analysis (ETA).
o Zonal Hazard Analysis (ZHA).
• Developing and maintaining Hazard Logs.
• Developing and maintaining Safety Case Reports.
• Developing Safety Arguments, including using Claims, Argument Evidence (CAE) and/or Goal Structuring Notation (GSN).
• Supporting Safety and Environmental Committees and Project Safety and Environmental Panels.

Desirable

• The candidate should be degree qualified in an engineering or appropriate science discipline.
• Candidates should have an ability to understand and appreciate the complexities and interdependencies of equipment and systems that make up defence platforms.
• Prior knowledge or understanding of the potential impact upon safety from different technologies (e.g. electrical/electronic hardware, software, mechanisms and human interfaces) and how system safety can be assured, is highly desirable, but not essential.
• Previous experience of safety management, in defence or other high hazard industries, including an understanding of the application of applicable standards and regulation, is highly desirable, but not essential.

Possess strong written and verbal communication skills, including presenting a comprehensive and convincing argument.

Ideally, but not essential, the candidate should have experience in developing risk assessments; participating in Hazard Identification meetings, e.g. SWIFT, HAZOPs; understanding of the ALARP principle and developing safety arguments, although with a growing capability, on the job training and personal development will be provided.

The role will have significant UK MOD and wider interfaces; therefore some UK travel may be expected.

This role may require security clearance and offers of employment will be dependent on obtaining the relevant level of clearance. If this is necessary it will be discussed with you at interview.
