Atkins’ Transportation Consultancy Practice comprises over one thousand staff delivering planning, technical and advisory consultancy services to a wide-ranging client base in the UK and overseas. Intelligent Mobility and Smart Technologies (IMST) is priority area for the company’s growth strategy. IMST is a growing practice of around 80 engineers, consultants and technical specialists transforming the future of transport. We work with emerging technologies to push the boundaries of transportation and drive innovation. Our projects include urban & inter-urban traffic management and technology, journey management, roads of the future, connected autonomous vehicles, smart cities and data exploitation amongst other things.

In order to maintain our market-leading position our team require a variety of skills and capabilities, including specialists in safety risk. As part of this team you can develop and deploy your skills on innovative projects such as stopped vehicle detection and connected/autonomous vehicles. You can help shape the risk management of pilots and initiatives such as increasing the speed limit through roadworks or improving air quality on the strategic road network. You can influence the decision making on complex infrastructure such as Smart Motorways and help ensure that a systems and risk based approach is at the core of the next generation of design tools such as the Rapid Engineering Model.

Role
Atkins is seeking a candidate to join our Safety Risk and Operations team. In this role you will be required to leverage your experience and knowledge to ensure sound risk-based decisions. There is a diverse range of projects to work on, with a focus on managing risk on highways. You will be leading the Safety Governance of operationally complex highways schemes and working across disciplines to manage the operational safety of the end state. This will require you to engage with the client, stakeholders and contractor to deliver safety objectives for the affected parties. To succeed you will need to be motivated, passionate and work collaboratively with others.

The role involves leading and supporting IMST team projects for public sector organisations in a wide number of activities, providing ‘whole life’ consultancy across the breadth of a project. You will also work with specialists in rail systems, cyber security, human factors, and big data as well as across our highways focused Operational Safety technical network. Your experience will enable us to provide high quality consultancy as part of a project team that proactively manages safety risk. Candidates will also be required to prepare bids, act as project manager and be willing to lead appropriately sized tasks themselves.

Responsibilities
• Writing Safety Cases and Safety Risk Assessments for complex projects and issues, demonstrating the achievement of safety objectives and safety risk criteria.
• Undertaking hazard identification, hazard analysis, and analysis and evaluation of safety risk using qualitative and quantitative data.
• Leading the Safety Governance of major highways improvement projects as part of a larger ‘Operational Safety’ Team.
• Chairing Safety Review Groups and Hazard Workshops; internal and external liaison with stakeholders with interest in safety outcomes.
• Providing leadership in Safety.
• Monitoring projects to ensure delivery to budget, time and quality.
• Effective management of the delivery of work to standards and procedures (internal and client).
• Contribution to the development of consultancy offerings and propositions; identification and development of bids; preparation of cost estimates and scopes.


Requirements

Qualifications
• Degree (or equivalent) in engineering or an appropriate technical subject.
• Membership at the relevant grade, or ability to obtain it, of a relevant professional body. E.g. CIHT, SaRS, ICE etc.
Essential Criteria
• Ability to understand complex issues and develop approaches to address them.
• Experience of undertaking quantitative and qualitative data analysis to understand safety performance.
• Ability to undertake safety risk assessment including the identification of hazards and mitigations.
• Working knowledge of the legal aspects of highways safety risk e.g. Highways Act, Health and Safety at Work Etc. Act.

Desirable Criteria
• Experience of application of Safety Risk Management processes e.g. GG104 Requirements for Safety Risk Assessment.
• Awareness of best practice approaches for the management of Road User and Road Worker risk in a highways environment e.g. Road Safety Audit.
• Ability to lead safety committees or hazard workshops, work with stakeholders and build a consensus.
• Experience of managing safety risk in operationally complex or novel systems/projects.
• Working knowledge of maintenance and other operational aspects of highways.
• Experience of supporting business development.
• Project management experience.
