Atkins is currently seeking a Scientist II-Ecology/Environment to join our rapidly expanding Environmental Sciences group, in the Atlanta, GA office. The ideal candidate for this position will apply their ecological and environmental knowledge toward the assessment of project sites, along with preparation of environment documents and regulatory applications.


JOB DETAILS:

  • Performs work which involves conventional methods and requires the use of analysis, interpretation, and deductivevreasoning to carry out diversified projects or phases of a single project. Typical duties and responsibilities of this position will include:
  • Evaluation of impacts from transportation and other civil engineering projects on the natural environment;
  • Lead field investigations of projects sites including wetland and stream delineations with functional assessments according to applicable methodologies, and evaluate, map, and describe on-site habitats while identifying those potentially suitable to support protected species;
  • Perform GPS field mapping, post process and distribute GPS-mapped resources in multiple formats;
  • Coordinate with design professionals and overall project team for accurate depiction of natural resources on construction plans and to identify opportunities for avoiding and minimizing potential impacts;
  • Prepare documentation detailing the findings of ecological surveys and coordinate with state and federal agencies;
  • Prepare special provisions, permit applications for the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), and buffer variance application packages for Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD);
  • Conduct site reviews with the USACE and/or Georgia EPD and participate in project meetings.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • B.S. or M.S. in a field of Science.  This level may be achieved by Scientists with minimum three years' experience since Bachelor's degree or two years' experience with Master's degree; typical incumbent has five years' experience.
 
 
SPECIAL SKILLS:
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail, technical writing proficiency, computer skills, and communication skills are required for the position. Experience and core competencies must include:
  • Ecological evaluations and wetland delineation, threatened species investigation and reporting, and associated regulatory consultation;
  • Proficiency with the MS Office suite of software, ArcGIS, Trimble GPS, and Pathfinder Office;
  • Aptitude for maintaining a professional attitude, able to effectively communicate with clients and colleagues, both verbally and in writing;
  • Strong organizational and time management skills; and
  • Analytical skills and aptitude for attention to detail in work product.
  • Local candidates are preferred for this position, although there may be minimal relocation funding available for the preferred candidate.

 

 

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Preference will be given to candidates that have the following skills and/or experience:
  • Similar environmental consultation experience related to GDOT and/or other linear projects including projects with federal funding, and regulatory consultation experience with USACE and/or Ga EPD;
  • Strong plant identification skills applicable within the southeast, specifically within the ecoregions comprising Georgia;
  • Experience with review and interpretation of construction plans; and
  • Completion of training courses required for GDOT pre-qualification in the area of Ecology
    Eligible candidates must have a valid driver’s license and current US work authorization to work for any US employer without sponsorship now or in the future.
