Atkins is currently seeking a highly motivated self-starter to join our Houston Energy Team as an Entry-Level Scientist/Ecologist.
Job Description:
Under the supervision of Senior Staff, the selected candidate will perform standard scientific work while developing professional proficiency for a variety of ecological and/or environmental assessments.
Applies standard practices and techniques in specific situations which generally include the following:
Carries out data collection, gathering samples and collecting field data.
Tests samples and analyzes results obtained.
Writes technical reports of findings.
Participates in site assessments, monitoring studies or field surveys.
Writes permit applications and reports for review by senior scientists.
Performs such other duties as the Supervisor may from time to time deem necessary.
Job Requirements:
Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Advanced knowledge of MS Excel, MS Word, MS PowerPoint.
Advanced knowledge of Primavera P6, Success Estimator, Cobra, Oracle and EVMS.
Ability to develop estimates from all sources including Orthographic Drawings, Isometric Drawings, Valve and Line Lists and Major Equipment Lists and Sketches as required.
Ability to develop labor unit rates based on the type of project as required.
Advanced proficiency in the use of R.S. Means and Richardsons as required.
Generally applies standard techniques, procedures and criteria in carrying out a sequence of somewhat diversified scientific tasks, requiring the use of analysis, interpretation, and deductive reasoning, and being able to detect problems in using standardized procedures.
Receives direct supervision on new aspects of assignments, exercising independent judgment on details of regular assignments, making preliminary selections, minor modifications and adaptations of alternatives.
May perform limited portions of a broader assignment of a more experienced scientist using prescribed methods.
May give work direction or coordinate the work of technicians and others who assist in specific assignments.
Interfaces with technical professionals and technical managers.
Limited external contacts with subconsultants, regulatory agency staff and suppliers of services, equipment and/or analytical instruments.
Education/Experience:
B.S. or B.A. in a field of Science to commensurate with hiring discipline.
Minimal experience is required of incumbents with directly related Bachelor's degree; no experience is required with a Master's degree.
Good analytical skills and attention to detail; technical writing, computer and communication skills.
Ability to perform basic tasks within the suite of Microsoft Office Products (Excel, Word, etc.).
The ability to understand and utilize GIS applications, a basic understanding of wetland delineations, and basic plant identification skills are required.

Ability to process paper/electronic documents and utilize computer equipment; ability to communicate clearly both orally and in writing; ability to visit project sites if necessary.
Job also requires ability to assemble and analyze data.
The candidate must also be able to perform field work under hot, humid and other inclement weather.
Some field work will include light lifting and/or carrying of filed equipment or packs.
Overnight travel may be required for this position (up to approx. 25%).
